FRUIT

Apples grown commercially in Illinois during 1997 totaled 78 million pounds, an increase of 47 percent from the 1996 production. Of the 78 million pounds produced, 71 million pounds were utilized. The average price for apples decreased 11.5 cents per pound from the 1996 price. Despite 20 million more pounds being utilized this year, the decrease in price held the value of the crop to 12.42 million dollars, 16 percent less than 1996.

Illinois peach production totaled 12.5 million pounds in 1997, up 10.5 million pounds from 1996. Utilized production was ten million pounds, an increase of nine million pounds from 1996. The average price was 40.6 cents per pound, down 37 percent from the 1996 price. The increased production pushed the value of production to 4.06 million pounds, an increase of 3.42 million dollars from 1996.
