HOGS AND PIGS

In 1997, Illinois produced 1.82 billion pounds of pork, fourth in the United States. Pork production is centered primarily in the northwestern and western counties of the state, from Henry on the north to Pike on the south. There were 7,500 hog farms in Illinois in 1997, 15 percent fewer than in 1996.

Illinois hog producers had 4.80 million hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 1997, up nine percent from a year earlier. The inventory consisted of 560,000 head of breeding stock and 4,240,000 market hogs.

The average value per head for hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 1997 was $83.00, down from $96.00 a year earlier. The total value of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 1997 was $398.4 million, down six percent from the 1996 value of $422.4 million.

Farrowings for the period December 1996 through November 1997 totaled 905 thousand, up from 900 thousand a year earlier. The average number of pigs saved per litter was 8.42, compared to 8.36 the previous year.

The December 1996 through November 1997 pig crop was 7.6 million, up one percent from a year earlier. Hog and pig marketings in 1997 totaled 8.13 million head, down two percent from 1996.
