CROPS

The crop production index in 1998 for Illinois was 127 percent of the 1977 base. Farmers harvested 23.6 million acres of crops in 1998, up from 23.4 million acres in 1997. The value of the crops produced was 6.1 billion dollars, down 14 percent from 1997.

Corn production in 1998, at 1.473 billion bushels, was up three percent from 1997. Acreage harvested for grain in 1998 was 10.45 million acres, down 600 thousand acres from 1997.

Soybean production was at a record level in 1998, at 464.2 million bushels, up eight percent from the previous record of 429 million bushels set in 1994. Soybean yield averaged 44.0 bushels per acre compared to 43.0 bushels per acre in 1997. Harvested acreage totaled 10.55 million bushels, up six percent from the record breaking acreage in 1997.

Wheat acreage harvested increased ten percent from 1997 to 1.2 million acres in 1998. Production, at 57.6 million bushels in 1998, was down 13 percent from 1997. Wheat yield in 1998 was 48.0 bushels per acre, down 21 percent from the record yield set in 1997.

Production of sorghum for grain in 1998 was 7.9 million bushels, down 24 percent from the 1997 production of 10.5 million bushels. Acreage harvested for grain totaled 107 thousand acres, down 8 thousand acres from the previous year. The average grain yield in 1997 was 74 bushels per acre, down 17 bushels per acre from the previous years' yield.
