HOGS AND PIGS

In 1998, Illinois produced 1.89 billion pounds of pork, fourth in the United States. Pork production is centered primarily in the northwestern and western counties of the state, from Henry on the north to Pike on the south. There were 7,000 hog farms in Illinois in 1998, seven percent fewer than in 1997.

Illinois hog producers had 4.85 million hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 1998, up three percent from a year earlier. The inventory consisted of 530,000 head of breeding stock and 4,320,000 market hogs.

The average value per head for hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 1998 was $40.00, down from $83.00 a year earlier. The total value of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 1998 was $194 million, down 50 percent from the 1997 value of $390.1 million.

Farrowings for the period December 1997 through November 1998 totaled 945 thousand, up from 900 thousand a year earlier. The average number of pigs saved per litter was 8.6, compared to 8.42 the previous year.

The December 1997 through November 1998 pig crop was 8.1 million, up seven percent from a year earlier. Hog and pig marketings in 1998 totaled 8.9 million head, up ten percent from 1997.
