AGRICULTURAL PRICES

January prices received by Illinois farmers for all commodities decreased to 81 percent of the base. This is three points less than the revised December figure but four points above January 2000. The current year's base is computed by multiplying the average production for the five-year period by the average price for each year. These five years are summed and then divided by five to arrive at an average (base) for the period. The current five-year average production is then multiplied by the current price and divided by the average for the five years to arrive at the current index. The January All Crops index, at 76 percent of the base, is two points below the revised December number, but is four points higher than January 2000. Prices decreased for corn, soybeans, sorghum and hay from a month earlier. The All Livestock index is at 100 percent of the base, five points lower than the revised December figure. The price of hogs and barrows and gilts decreased, while the price of beef cattle and calves increased. The hog-corn ratio is at 17.8.

The U.S. preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in January was 96 based on 1990-92=100, down two points from the December index. The lower prices for eggs, cotton, hogs and soybeans were partially offset by higher prices for cattle, tomatoes, milk and strawberries. Compared with January 2000, the All Farm Products Index was five points higher. Price increases from January 2000 for cattle, milk, cotton and strawberries were partially offset by lower prices for oranges, apples, potatoes and lettuce.
