in-crop-weather State Indiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date September 15, 2002 Issue IN-CW3702 Agricultural Summary Corn harvest is steadily gaining momentum in the southern regions and is underway in some early maturing fields in other areas of the state, according to the Indiana Agricultural Statistics Service. Hot, dry weather prevailed during most of the week helping corn and soybeans advance toward maturity. Precipitation was spotty and scattered. Many soybean fields are turning yellow and plants are rapidly dropping leaves. Chopping corn for silage and harvest of seed corn continued. Topsoil moisture is becoming very dry in most areas of the state from lack of precipitation. Field Crops Report There were 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork. Corn condition is rated 26 percent good to excellent compared with 28 percent last week and 74 percent last year at this time. Eighty-three percent of the corn acreage has reached the dent stage compared with 98 percent last year and 91 percent for the average. By area, 80 percent of the corn acreage is in the dent stage in the north, 86 percent in the central regions and 83 percent in the south. Thirty-three percent of the corn crop is mature compared with 54 percent last year and 50 percent for the 5-year average. Four percent of the corn acreage is harvested compared with 6 percent last year and 6 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition is rated 30 percent good to excellent compared with 32 percent last week and 72 percent a year earlier. Thirty-nine percent of the soybean acreage is shedding leaves compared with 55 percent last year and 58 percent for the average. By area, 36 percent of the soybean acreage is shedding leaves in the north, 38 percent in the central regions and 44 percent in the south. Other activities during the week included baling hay, cleaning grain bins, preparing equipment, FSA paperwork and taking care of livestock. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report Pasture condition is rated 4 percent good, 18 percent fair, 31 percent poor and 47 percent very poor. Third cutting of alfalfa hay is 83 percent complete compared with 100 percent last year and 93 percent for the average. Tobacco harvest is 59 percent complete compared with 74 percent last year and 64 percent for the average. Feeding of hay continued on many livestock farms.
