in-crop-weather State Indiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date October 13, 2002 Issue IN-CW4102 Agricultural Summary Corn and soybean harvest is in full swing around the state, according to the Indiana Agricultural Statistics Service. Most farmers concentrated on harvesting soybeans, while some continued to harvest corn as lodging of corn plants is a major concern for farmers. Precipitation slowed field activities in some of the southern areas of the state, but conditions were favorable in most of the central and northern regions for fieldwork. The best progress for corn harvest has been in the southwestern region of the state. Corn harvest is 5 days behind average. Soybean harvest is 2 days behind average. Seeding winter wheat, tillage of soils, and spreading fertilizer progressed rapidly last week. Field Crops Report There were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Ninety-two percent of the corn crop is mature compared with 98 percent last year and 98 percent for the 5-year average. Thirty-one percent of the corn acreage is harvested compared with 37 percent last year and 39 percent for the 5-year average. By area, 23 percent of the corn acreage is harvested in the north, 27 percent in the central regions and 53 percent in the south. Moisture content of harvested corn is averaging 20 percent. Ninety-seven percent of the soybean acreage is shedding leaves compared with 100 percent for both last year and the 5-year average. Ninety percent of the soybean acreage is mature compared with 95 percent last year and 96 percent for the average. Fifty-eight percent of the soybean acreage is harvested compared with 53 percent last year and 65 percent for the average. By area, 63 percent of the soybean acreage is harvested in the north, 64 percent in the central regions and 38 percent in the south. Moisture content of harvested soybeans is averaging 12.5 percent. Forty-nine percent of the winter wheat acreage is seeded compared with 41 percent last year and 48 percent for the average. Twenty-three percent of the winter wheat acreage has emerged compared with 13 percent last year and 16 percent for the average. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report Pasture condition is rated 15 percent good, 30 percent fair, 30 percent poor and 25 percent very poor. Pastures have improved in some areas of the state. Tobacco harvest is winding up in most of the southern regions of the state. Livestock remain in mostly good condition. Fall calving is active.
