in-crop-weather State Indiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date November 10, 2002 Issue IN-CW4502 Agricultural Summary Many farmers were able to finish harvest of their corn and soybean fields last week, according to the Indiana Agricultural Statistics Service. Rain and poor weather conditions slowed field activities in some areas of the state. Strong winds and thunderstorms moved through some regions of the state during the weekend. Corn harvest is 1 day ahead of average and 5 days ahead of last year. Fall tillage continued to make good progress. Cleaning up and repairing equipment, moving grain to market, attending FSA offices, spreading fertilizer and lime were other major activities taking place last week. Field Crops Report There were 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork. Ninety percent of the corn acreage is harvested compared with 80 percent last year and 89 percent for the 5-year average. By area, 91 percent of the corn acreage is harvested in the north, 89 percent in the central regions and 92 percent in the south. Moisture content of harvested corn is averaging about 18 percent. Ninety-six percent of the soybean acreage is harvested compared with 94 percent last year and 98 percent for the average. By area, 98 percent of the soybean acreage is harvested in the north, 98 percent in the central regions and 90 percent in the south. Moisture content of harvested soybeans is averaging about 12.5 percent. Ninety-eight percent of the winter wheat acreage is seeded compared with 97 percent last year and 98 percent for the average. By area, 100 percent of the winter wheat acreage is seeded in the north, 99 percent in the central regions and 97 percent in the south. Ninety percent of the winter wheat acreage has emerged compared with 81 percent last year and 88 percent for the average. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report Pastures continue to improve, especially in the southern regions of the state. Livestock remain in mostly good condition. Cattle are being moved into corn stubble on some farms. Hay supplies are rated 13 percent very short, 38 percent short, 46 percent adequate and 3 percent surplus. Hay prices are high. Weaning and selling calves continued.
