in-crop-weather State Indiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date August 15, 2004 Issue IN-CW3304 Agricultural Summary Much cooler than normal temperatures continued around the state last week, according to Indiana Agricultural Statistics. Crop reporters and farmers indicate warmer weather along with some rain is needed to help crop development, especially pod fill in soybean plants. Sudden Death Syndrome is showing up in some soybean fields. Very little precipitation was received last week. Harvesting of corn for silage continued on some farms. Cutting and baling of hay made good progress. Field Crops Report There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Virtually all of the corn acreage has silked compared with 96 percent last year and 99 percent for the average. Seventy-eight percent of the corn acreage has reached the dough stage compared with 41 percent last year and 68 percent for the average. Thirty-four percent of the corn acreage has reached the dent stage compared with 5 percent last year and 24 percent for the average. Corn condition is rated 79 percent good to excellent compared with 64 percent last year at this time. Ninety-eight percent of the soybean acreage is blooming compared with 88 percent last year and 96 percent for the 5-year average. Eighty-five percent of the soybean acreage is setting pods compared with 58 percent last year and 77 percent for the average. Soybean condition is rated 73 percent good to excellent compared with 61 percent last year at this time. Third cutting of alfalfa hay is 50 percent complete compared with 23 percent last year and 54 percent for the average. Other activities during the week were repairing equipment, attending the state fair, spraying, scouting fields, mowing roads, cleaning out grain bins, hauling manure and taking care of livestock. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report Pasture condition is rated 16 percent excellent, 54 percent good, 22 percent fair, 7 percent poor and 1 percent very poor. Livestock are in mostly good condition. Cooler temperatures have helped.
