in-crop-weather State Indiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date September 12, 2004 Issue IN-CW3704 Agricultural Summary Farmers were harvesting corn and soybeans in some of the early maturing fields last week, according to Indiana Agricultural Statistics. The best progress for corn harvest was in the southwestern region and in the west central region for soybean harvest. Favorable weather conditions continue to help corn and soybean fields rapidly advance toward maturity. Many farmers were making final preparations to harvesting equipment and cleaning out grain bins. Field Crops Report There were 6.4 days suitable for fieldwork. Ninety-two percent of the corn acreage has reached the dent stage compared with 71 percent last year and 88 percent for the average. Forty-eight percent of the corn acreage is mature (safe from frost) compared with 18 percent last year and 40 percent for the average. Three percent of the corn acreage is harvested compared with 2 percent last year and 4 percent for the average. Corn condition is rated 79 percent good to excellent compared with 57 percent last year at this time. Sixty percent of the soybean acreage is shedding leaves compared with 27 percent last year and 44 percent for the average. Twenty-five percent of the soybean acreage is mature compared with 5 percent last year and 12 percent for the average. Four percent of the soybean acreage is harvested compared with 1 percent for both last year and the average. Soybean condition is rated 72 percent good to excellent compared with 59 percent last year at this time. Third cutting of alfalfa hay is 94 percent complete compared with 85 percent last year and 93 percent for the average. Tobacco harvest is 59 complete compared with 48 percent last year and 64 percent for the average. Other activities during the week were cutting and baling hay, tillage of soils and attending field days. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report Pasture condition is rated 14 percent excellent, 54 percent good, 23 percent fair, 8 percent poor and 1 percent very poor. Livestock are in mostly good condition.
