in-crop-weather State Indiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date September 11, 2005 Issue IN-CW3705 Agricultural Summary Above normal temperatures during the week has helped to rapidly advance the corn and soybean crops toward maturity, according to the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Harvest of corn and soybeans is well underway, especially in the southwestern area of the state. Silage and seed corn continue to be harvested in some northern areas. Field Crops Report There were 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork. Corn condition is rated 42 percent good to excellent compared with 79 percent last year at this time. Eighty-seven percent of the corn acreage has reached the dent stage compared with 91 percent last year and 85 percent for average. By area, corn in dent stage is 87 percent complete in both the north and central regions and 89 percent complete in the south. Thirty-eight percent of the corn is mature compared with 45 percent last year and 37 percent for the average. Two percent of the corn has been harvested compared with 3 percent for both last year and the average. Soybean condition is rated 52 percent good to excellent compared with 72 percent last year. Forty-five percent of the soybean acreage is shedding leaves compared with 56 percent last year and 41 percent for the average. One percent of the soybean acreage has been harvested compared with 4 percent last year and 1 percent for the average. Two percent of the winter wheat acreage has been planted compared with one percent for both last year and the average. Third cutting of alfalfa hay is 97 percent complete compared with 93 percent last year and 91 percent for the average. Tobacco harvest is 31 percent complete compared with 56 percent last year and 58 percent for the average. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report Pasture condition is rated 1 percent excellent, 22 percent good, 44 percent fair, 24 percent poor and 9 percent very poor. Livestock are in mostly good condition. However, water supplies are beginning to dry up in some areas.
