KANSAS JANUARY CATTLE INVENTORY UP 2 PERCENT

All cattle and calves
on farms and ranches in Kansas on January 1, 2001 totaled 6.70 million head (see table 1), up 2 percent from the revised January 1, 2000 level of 6.60 million head. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 1.62 million, were up 3 percent from a year earlier. Beef cow inventories were estimated at 1.524 million, up 2 percent from last year's level of 1.492 million head. Milk cows, at 96,000 head, were up 9 percent when compared to the January 1, 2000 level. Bulls over 500 pounds totaled 85,000 head, unchanged from last year. Beef replacement heifers, at 235,000 head, were down 2 percent from the previous year. Milk replacement heifers at 70,000 heifers increased 40 percent from last year's revised level of 50,000 head. Other heifers over 500 pounds increased 4 percent from last year's revised level of 1.60 million head to 1.67 million head. Steers over 500 pounds, at 2.26 million head, were up less than 1 percent from the previous year's number. Calves under 500 pounds totaled 760,000 head, down 4 percent from the January 1, 2000 figure of 795,000 head. The 2000 calf crop, at 1.48 million head, was up 2 percent from last year. During 2000, a total of 36,000 cattle farms, 29,000 beef cow farms, and 1,300 milk cow farms were operating in Kansas.

U.S. CATTLE INVENTORY

All cattle and calves in the United States as of January 1, 2001, totaled 97.3 million head, 1 percent below the 98.2 million on January 1, 2000 and 2 percent below the 99.1 million two years ago. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 42.6 million, were slightly below the 42.8 million on January 1, 2000 and 1 percent below the 42.9 million two years ago. Beef cows, at 33.4 million, were down 1 percent from both January 1, 2000 and January 1, 1999. Milk cows, at 9.20 million, were up slightly from January 1, 2000 and 1 percent above two years ago. Other class estimates on January 1, 2001, and the changes from January 1 last year are as follows: all heifers 500 pounds and over, 19.8 million, up 1 percent; beef replacement heifers, 5.59 million, up 2 percent; milk replacement heifers, 4.05 million, up 1 percent; other heifers, 10.1 million, down slightly; steers weighing 500 pounds and over, 16.4 million, down 1 percent; bulls weighing 500 pounds and over, 2.27 million, down 1 percent; calves under 500 pounds, 16.2 million, down 4 percent; and all cattle and calves on feed for slaughter, 14.2 million, up 1 percent. The 2000 calf crop was estimated at 38.6 million head, down slightly from both 1999 and 1998. Calves born during the first half of the year are estimated at 28.4 million, down slightly from both 1999 and 1998.

The number of operations with cattle totaled 1,075,860 during 2000, down 2 percent from 1999 and 4 percent below 1998. Beef cow operations in 2000 were down 2 percent from 1999 and 3 percent below 1998. Milk cow operations were 5 percent below last year and 10 percent below two years ago.


SPECIAL NOTE:
Data for beef cow and milk cow replacement heifers expected to calve in the coming year and the number of calves, other heifers, and steers grazing small grain pasture in the combined three state region of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas are being published in this issue for the first time. These data will be published on an annual basis in the January release.

    .    Beef replacement heifers expected to calve during 2001 totaled 3.14 million.
    .    Milk replacement heifers expected to calve during 2001 totaled 2.54 million.
    .    Calves, other heifers, and steers grazing on small grain pasture in the three state region totaled 1.78 million head.
