CROP
PRODUCTION

CORN PRODUCTION AT ALL TIME HIGH

The Kansas wheat crop is estimated at 494.9 million bushels, unchanged from the July 1 forecast but 2 percent smaller than the 1997 crop, according to Kansas Agricultural Statistics (see table 1). It is the second largest crop with 1990 production of 472 million bushels now ranking third. Yield is estimated at a record high 49 bushels per acre, surpassing the previous record high of 46 bushels in 1997. The yield is up 3 bushels from a year ago and 20 bushels above the yield in 1996. Acreage harvested for grain, at 10.1 million acres, is unchanged from July 1 but down 900,000 acres from the 11.0 million harvested in 1997.

Corn production is expected to total 407.6 million bushels, a new record for Kansas. The previous record high was 386.1 million bushels in 1997. This year's production is 6 percent above last year. Planted acreage was 3.0 million acres, 5 percent above a year ago and the largest corn acreage since 1946. Acreage expected to be harvested for grain is 2.85 million acres, up 6 percent from last year. Corn yields are expected to average 143 bushels per acre, equal to last year's yield but down from 152 bushels per acre in 1996.

Kansas sorghum grain production is forecast at 254.1 million bushels, down 7 percent from last year. Yields are expected to average 77 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from last year's yield. Planted acreage is 3.5 million acres, down 150,000 acres from 1997. The acreage for harvest, at 3.3 million acres, is down 6 percent from 1997.

Soybean production is forecast at a new record high of 95.0 million bushels, up 7 percent from last year's record high 88.8 million bushels. Yield is forecast at 38 bushels per acre, also a record high, and up 1 bushel from last year's yield. Harvested acreage is expected to be 2.5 million acres, up from the 2.4 million acres harvested last year.

U.S. CROP PRODUCTION

UNITED STATES: All wheat production is forecast at 2.55 billion bushels, up 1 percent from both the July forecast and 1997 (see table 4). The U.S. yield is now forecast at 43.0 bushels per acre. This is up 0.4 bushels per acre from last month and is a new record high yield. Winter wheat production is forecast at 1.91 billion bushels, up 1 percent from last month and 2 percent higher than 1997. The U.S. yield forecast is at a record high 47.0 bushels per acre. This is up 0.4 bushels from July 1. Grain area was not changed from last month. Hard Red Winter wheat production is up 2 percent from July due to higher yields in Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, and South Dakota. The latter two state yields are at a new record high. Soft Red Winter, at 449 million bushels, is down less than 1 percent.

The 1998 sorghum grain production forecast is 529 million bushels, down 19 percent from 1997 and 34 percent below 1996. Area for grain is forecast at 7.84 million acres, down 17 percent from last year. Yield decreases are expected in 11 of the top 18 producing states with Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas showing the largest decreases.

Corn production is forecast at 9.59 billion bushels, up 2 percent from last year and up 3 percent from 1996. Based on August 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 130.0 bushels per acre, up 3.0 bushels from a year ago. If realized, this would be the second largest production and the third highest yield on record. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 73.8 million acres, down 495,000 acres from June, but virtually unchanged from 1997.

Soybean production forecast at a record high 2.82 billion bushels, up 4 percent from last year's record of 2.73 billion bushels. Yield is forecast at 39.5 bushels per acre, 0.5 bushels above last year, but 1.9 bushels below the record yield set in 1994. Area for harvest is estimated at a record 71.6 million acres, up 2 percent from 1997 but down fractionally from June.
