PRODUCTION

CORN PRODUCTION DOWN & SOYBEAN PRODUCTION UP

The Kansas wheat crop is estimated at 423.2 million bushels, unchanged from the July 1 forecast but 14 percent smaller than the 1998 crop, according to Kansas Agricultural Statistics (see table 1). Yield is estimated at 46 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from a year ago. Acreage harvested for grain, at 9.2 million acres, is unchanged from July 1 but down 900,000 acres from the 10.1 million harvested in 1998.

Corn production is expected to total 389.2 million bushels, down from the previous year's record high of 419.0 million bushels. This year's production is down 7 percent from last year. Planted acreage was 3.0 million acres, unchanged from a year ago. Acreage expected to be harvested for grain is 2.80 million acres, down 50,000 acres from last year. Corn yields are expected to average 139 bushels per acre, well below the 147 bushels per acre in 1998.

Kansas sorghum grain production is forecast at 248.2 million bushels, down 6 percent from the 264.0 million bushels in 1998. Yields are expected to average 73 bushels per acre, down 7 bushels from last year's yield. Planted acreage is 3.6 million acres, up 100,000 acres from 1998. Sorghum harvested acreage, at 3.4 million acres, is up 3 percent from 1998.

Soybean production is forecast at 84.8 million bushels, up 13 percent from last year's production of 75.0 million bushels. Yield is forecast at 32 bushels per acre, up 2 bushels from last year's yield. Harvested acreage is expected to be 2.65 million acres, up from the 2.5 million acres harvested last year.

U.S. CROP PRODUCTION

UNITED STATES: All wheat production is placed at 2.31 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the July forecast and 9 percent from 1998 (see table 2). Based on August 1 conditions, the U.S. yield is forecast at 42.5 bushels per acre, down 0.2 bushels from last month. Winter wheat production is forecast at 1.69 billion bushels, down 10 percent from last year. The U.S. yield forecast is 47.4 bushels per acre. This is up 0.4 bushels from July 1 and up 0.5 bushels from last year. Acres for harvest as grain are forecast at 35.6 million, down 11 percent from 1998.

The 1999 sorghum grain production forecast is 588 million bushels, up 13 percent from 1998 but 7 percent below 1997. Acreage for grain is forecast at 8.50 million acres, up 10 percent from last year. Based on August 1 conditions, yield is forecast at 69.2 bushels per acre, up 1.9 bushels form 1998. Yield increases are expected in 12 of the top 18 producing States, mainly in the southern part of the growing area. A 7 bushel decrease from last year in Kansas (the largest sorghum producing state) limited the increase in the U.S. forecast.

Corn production is forecast at 9.56 billion bushels, down 2 percent from last year but up 4 percent from 1997. Based on August 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 134.7 bushels per acre, up 0.3 bushels from a year ago. If realized, this would be the third largest production and the second highest yield on record. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 71.0 million acres, down 84,000 acres from June.

Soybean production is forecast at a record high 2.87 billion bushels, up 4 percent from last year's record of 2.76 billion bushels. Yield is forecast at 39.2 bushels per acre, up 0.3 bushels above last year, but 2.2 bushels below the record set in 1994. Acreage for harvest is estimated at a record 73.3 million acres, up 3 percent from 1998 but down fractionally from June.
