KANSAS DRY BEAN PRODUCTION UP

Kansas dry bean production is estimated at 387,000 hundredweight (cwt.), up 7,000 cwt. from the 1998 crop. Yield is estimated at 1,850 pounds per acre, 150 pounds below the 2,000 pounds per acre last year. Harvested acres, at 20,900, are up from 19,000 acres harvested in 1998 and 20,000 acres harvested in 1997.

United States production of dry beans is estimated at 31.0 million cwt. for 1999, 6 percent above 1998 and 11 percent above two years ago. Area for harvest is estimated at 1.92 million acres, up 12 percent from 1998 and 10 percent above 1996. The average yield, at 1,615 pounds per acre, dropped 80 pounds from 1998.
