November forecast, and 1.23 million bushels above last year's record high production of 419.0
million bushels. The yield averaged 141 bushels per acre, 2 bushels above the November
forecast, but 6 bushels below the 1998 yield. Planted area was 3.15 million acres, 150,000

record set last year.
HAY: Production of all types of hay was 7.26 million tons, down 550,000 tons from the previous forecast, and 765,000
tons from the previous year. Alfalfa production was down 19 percent from 1998, while other hay production was up 3
percent from 1998. Alfalfa acreage harvested was down 150,000 from 1998. Other hay harvested decreased by 50,000
acres.
SMALL GRAINS: Wheat production was 432.4 million bushels, down 13 percent from 1998 crop. Acres planted
totaled 10.0 million, down 7 percent from 1998. Acreage harvested, at 9.2 million acres, was down 9 percent and yield
was 2 bushels below 1998. Oat production of 3.29 million bushels was up 22 percent from the previous year. Barley
production, at 585,000 bushels, was up 305,000 bushels from 1998.
OTHER CROPS: Dry bean production, at 387,000 cwt., was up 7,000 cwt. from 1998. Sunflower production set a new
record with 405.8 million pounds, 75.0 million pounds above the old record set in 1994 and 52 percent above last year's
production. Cotton production, at 22,400 bales, compares to 13,900 bales in 1998. Harvest was 28,000 acres,
compared with 16,500 acres harvested in 1998. New seeding of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures was 80,000 acres, down
30,000 acres from last year.

CORN: The 1999 corn for grain production was estimated at 9.44 billion bushels, down 3 percent from the 1998 crop
and 1 percent from the November 1 forecast (see Table 2). The 1999 production ranks as the fourth highest production
on record behind the 1994, 1998, and 1992 respective crop years. The U.S. yield of 133.8 bushels per acre, was down
0.6 bushel from last year. Planted area totaled 77.4 million acres, 3 percent less than in 1998. Acres harvested for
grain, at 70.5 million acres, were also down by 3 percent from 1998.
SORGHUM: Production of grain sorghum in 1999 was estimated at 595 million bushels, up 14 percent from 1998. Area
harvested for grain was estimated at 8.5 million acres, up 11 percent from 1998. Average grain yield, at 69.7 bushels
per acre, was 2.4 bushels above the 1998 average yield. Kansas continues to lead the Nation in sorghum planted,
harvested acres, and production for both grain and silage. Texas sorghum acres decreased from last year, mainly due
to an increase in cotton planted acreage.
SOYBEANS: Production of soybeans totaled 2.64 billion bushels in 1999, down 1 percent from the November 1
forecast, 4 percent below 1998, and the third highest production. The average yield per acre in 1999 is estimated at
36.5 bushels, 0.2 bushel below the November 1 forecast, and 2.4 bushels below the 1998 yield. Planted area for the
U.S., at 73.8 million acres, was up 2 percent from 1998 and the largest planted acreage on record. Harvested area
totaled 72.5 million acres, also a record, and is 3 percent above 1998.
ALL WHEAT: Production of wheat for 1999 is estimated at 2.30 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the level published
in the "Small Grains 1999 Summary," and 10 percent below the 1998 level. Most of the production decline from the last
estimate is in Durum wheat, primarily due to a reduction in both grain area and yield in North Dakota. Durum wheat is
down 10 percent from the last estimate, other spring wheat is down 1 percent, and all winter wheat is up fractionally.

Wheat seeded in Kansas in the fall of 1999 for harvest in 2000 totaled 9.8 million acres, down 2 percent from the
previous year. This is the lowest planted acreage since 1971, when 9.6 million acres were planted. See table 3
for recent Kansas wheat estimates by district. Seeding began again in early September, primarily in the southern
and western districts. Soil moisture was short in a number of areas and some producers opted to wait for moisture
before seeding. A third of the crop was planted by the end of the month, ahead of both a year ago and average.
Some rain fell statewide the first of October, with heaviest amounts across the eastern third of the State. Seeding
proceeded rapidly during the first half of October, with about 90 percent of the crop in by mid-month. Condition
was reported at 76 percent good to excellent. Dry weather continued the last half of October and into November,
and seeding was virtually complete by the middle of the month. However, condition of the crop had declined to
only 45 percent good to excellent and caused some concern as to the crop's ability to survive a hard winter. Mild
conditions to date have settled some of these concerns.
Winter wheat seeded in the United States for harvest in 2000 is estimated at 42.9 million acres, down 1 percent
from 1999. This will be the lowest planted acreage since 1972. Class breakdowns approximate: hard red winter,
30.3 million acres; soft red winter, 9.2 million; and white winter, 3.4 million.

Kansas wheat stocks in all positions totaled 284.9 million bushels on December 1, 5 percent above last December. Wheat stored at off-farm locations (mills, elevators, warehouses, and processors) totaled 248.9 million bushels, which accounted for 87 percent of the total grain stocks. Wheat stocks in both on-farm and off-farm
positions were at their highest level since December 1991.
Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 171.6 million bushels, 1 percent below last year's level. Off-farm stocks
accounted for 121.6 million bushels and on-farm stocks 50.0 million bushels.
Kansas corn stocks in all locations, at 268.1 million bushels, were 5 percent higher than last December. Off-farm
stocks were 163.1 million bushels, which accounted for 61 percent of the total corn stocks. On-farm stocks at
105.0 million bushels, were unchanged from last December.
Off-farm oat stocks were 853,000 bushels, up 20 percent from last December.
Kansas soybeans in all locations totaled 67.2 million bushels, a 9 percent increase from December 1998. Off-
farm stocks, at 47.2 million bushels, were up 21 percent from last year and accounted for 70 percent of the total
soybean stocks. On-farm stocks totaled 20.0 million bushels, down 3.0 million bushels from the previous year's
stocks.
