WHEAT PRODUCTION DOWN FROM MAY FORECAST

The 2000 Kansas wheat crop is forecast at 386.4 million bushels as of June 1, 2000, according to Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service (see table 1). The current estimate is down 5 percent from the May 1 estimate and 11 percent from the 1999 crop. The current crop will be harvested from 9.2 million acres, unchanged from the acres harvested in 1999. Yield per harvested acre is expected to average 42.0 bushels, 2 bushels below the May forecast and 5.0 bushels below the 1999 final yield.

As of June 4, wheat condition is rated 4 percent excellent, 33 percent good, 40 percent fair, 16 percent poor, and 7 percent very poor. Wheat heading is complete, and 87 percent of the acreage has begun to turn color. This is ahead of the 52 percent in 1999 and well ahead of the average of 40 percent. Nine percent of the acreage is ripe. The crop is maturing rapidly with the dry, warm weather.

U.S. WINTER WHEAT PRODUCTION DOWN 5 PERCENT

Winter wheat production is forecast at 1.62 billion bushels, down 2 percent from the May 1 forecast and 5 percent below 1999 (see table 2). Based on June 1 conditions, the U.S. yield is forecast at 46.7 bushels per acre, down 0.8 bushel from the last forecast. Grain area totals 34.7 million acres, unchanged from May 1. Hard Red production is down 3 percent from a month ago to 944 million bushels. White Winter is up 1 percent from last month. Soft Red is up 1 percent from the last forecast and now totals 448 million bushels.

Forecasted head counts from the Objective Yield surveys in the six Hard Red Winter states (Colorado,

Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas) are slightly below last year's final counts. Average

head weights are well below last year's level. Winter wheat conditions in Kansas have dropped during May, leading to reduced yield potential. Temperatures in the 25-30 degree range hit the eastern plains of Colorado on May 13th. Most damage was in east central area of Colorado where the wheat was flowering. Crop progress is two weeks ahead of normal in Nebraska. Moisture supplies are adequate in most areas of Oklahoma. Lingering effects of the drought have had a significant impact on most of the major wheat producing areas of Texas.
