KANSAS CROP PRODUCTION BELOW LAST YEAR

Kansas corn production is expected to total 416.0 million bushels, 4 percent below the previous forecast and 1 percent below last year's crop. Acreage harvested for grain, at 3.25 million acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast but up 9 percent from 1999. Corn yields are expected to average 128 bushels per acre, down 5 bushels from September 1 and 13 bushels below the previous year.

Sorghum grain production is forecast at 176.7 million bushels, down 32 percent from last year. Kansas remains first in the nation in sorghum production. Yields are expected to average 57 bushels per acre, 3 bushels below last month and down 19 bushels from last year's yield. Acreage for harvest of grain is 3.1 million acres, down 100,000 acres from September 1 and down 300,000 acres from 1999.

Soybean production is expected to total 59.4 million bushels, 13 percent below September 1 and 27 percent below last year's crop. Acreage for harvest is expected to total 2.70 million acres, 150,000 acres below September 1 and 100,000 acres below last year. Yields are expected to average 22 bushels per acre, 2 bushels below September 1 and 7 bushels below 1999.

Sunflower production is forecast at 302.5 million pounds, down 25 percent from last year. Harvested acreage, at 275,000, is up 8,000 acres from last year. The yield is expected to average 1,100 pounds per acre, down 28 percent from last year.

All hay production is estimated to total 6.07 million tons, down 16 percent from 1999. Acreage harvested is 2.8 million acres, up 100,000 acres from last year.

Kansas wheat production for 2000 is estimated at 347.8 million bushels, down 4 percent from the August forecast and down 20 percent from 1999. Yield is estimated at 37.0 bushels per acre, down 2 bushel from the August forecast and 10 bushels below the 1999 yield. Acres harvested for grain totaled 9.4 million acres, up 100,000 acres from the previous forecast and 200,000 acres more than the 1999 harvest. A total of 9.8 million acres were planted to wheat for harvest in 2000, down 200,000 acres from the previous year. Oat production is 2.20 million bushels in 2000, down 33 percent from 1999. Final yield is estimated at 44.0 bushels per acre, down 4 bushels from the August forecast and 3 bushels from the 1999 yield. Grain was harvested from 50,000 of the 110,000 acres planted. Barley production totaled 245,000 bushels for 2000, well below the 585,000 bushel crop in 1999. Yields averaged 35.0 bushels per acre, 10 bushels below last year. Grain was harvested from 7,000 of the 8,000 acres planted.

Estimates of Kansas corn, sorghum, and soybean production by district are shown in table 2 on the following page. Wheat county and district data are not included in this report but will be released around the first of December.

U.S. CROP PRODUCTION

Corn grain production is forecast at 10.2 billion bushels, down 2 percent from last month, but up 8 percent from 1999. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 139.6 bushels per acre, down 2.2 bushels from last month, but up 5.8 bushels from a year ago. If realized, this would be the largest production and yield on record. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 73.0 million acres, down 50,000 acres from last month due to extremely dry weather in Colorado.

Sorghum grain production is forecast at 465 million bushels, 10 percent lower than the September forecast, and 22 percent below the 1999 total. Area harvested and to be harvested was down 8 percent from September at 7.67 million acres, and down 10 percent from the previous year. Total harvested acres is down 650,000 acres from September. The U.S. yield is forecast at 60.7 bushels per acre, down 1.4 bushels from last month and 9.0 bushels below 1999. Five of the 11 October estimating states lowered yields from the September forecast. Oklahoma showed the largest decrease from September, down 6 bushels per acre. Both Illinois and Louisiana were up 2 bushels and reported record yields. The remaining states reported no change.

Soybean production is forecast at a record high 2.82 billion bushels, down 3 percent from September 1, but 6 percent above 1999. The yield forecast, at 38.7 bushels per acre, decreased 0.8 bushel from last month but is 2.1 bushels above the 1999 final yield. Acreage for harvest is forecast at a record 73.0 million acres, down 1 percent from September 1, but up 1 percent from 1999. Acres expected for harvest were decreased by 450,000 acres in eight states, due to abandonment or harvested for hay. Downward adjustments to harvested acres were made in Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas.

GRAIN STOCKS

Kansas wheat stocks in all positions on September 1 totaled 384.5 million bushels, 3 percent less than last year's total. This is the second highest September Kansas wheat stocks level since 1990. Wheat stored in off-farm locations (mills, elevators, warehouses, and processors) totaled 341.5 million bushels, a decrease of 1 percent from a year ago. Wheat stored off the farm accounted for 89 percent of all wheat stocks. Wheat in farm storage totaled 43.0 million bushels, down 14 percent from last September.

Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 34.9 million bushels, up from 28.7 million bushels last year and the 27.9 million bushels on hand September 1 two years ago. Off-farm holdings of 28.9 million bushels were up from 22.7 million bushels last year. Sorghum grain stored off the farm accounted for 83 percent of the total sorghum stocks. On-farm

stocks of 6.0 million bushels were unchanged from a year ago.

Corn stocks in all locations, at 53.0 million bushels, were up 25 percent from a year ago. Off-farm corn stocks of 45.5 million bushels increased from 32.5 million bushels last year and accounted for 86 percent of total corn stocks. On-farm stocks of 7.5 million bushels were 23 percent below last September.

Kansas soybeans stored in all positions totaled 9.9 million bushels, down 3.3 million bushels from last year. Off-farm locations held 7.9 million bushels, down 2.7 million bushels from last year, and accounted for 80 percent of total soybean stocks. On-farm stocks of 2.0 million bushels are 600,000 bushels below last year.

Oats stored at off-farm locations totaled 0.7 million bushels.
