SORGHUM: Production of sorghum for grain in Kansas totaled 188.8 million bushels in
2000. Kansas continues to rank first in the nation in sorghum grain production. Production
is up 12.1 million bushels from the November forecast but down 69.6 million bushels from
last year. The yield, at 59 bushels per acre, was down 17 bushels from a year earlier but up
2 bushels from the November forecast. Kansas farmers planted 3.50 million acres, 100,000
acres less than last year. Harvested area for grain was 3.20 million acres, down 6 percent
from 1999. Sorghum silage production, at 650,000 tons, was less than half of the 1999
production.
SOYBEANS: Production of soybeans totaled 50.0 million bushels, down 6.7 million
bushels from the November forecast, and 31.2 million bushels below last year's record
production. Yield per acre is 20.0 bushels, down 1 bushel from November and 9
bushels below 1999. Harvested acreage was 2.50 million acres, down 11 percent from the record acres harvested last
year.
HAY: Production of all types of hay was 6.54 million tons, up 470,000 tons from the previous forecast, but down
935,000 tons from the previous year. Alfalfa production was down 7 percent from the revised 1999 crop of 3.96 million
ton, while other hay production was down 19 percent from last year. Alfalfa acreage harvested was unchanged from
1999. Other hay harvested increased by 50,000 acres.
SMALL GRAINS: Wheat production was 347.8 million bushels, down 20 percent from the 1999 crop. Acres planted
totaled 9.8 million, down 2 percent from 1999. Acreage harvested, at 9.4 million acres, was up 2 percent but yield was
10 bushels below 1999.
OTHER CROPS: Dry bean production, at 289,000 cwt., was down 98,000 cwt. from 1999. Sunflower production totaled
252.1 million pounds, 38 percent below last year's production. Cotton production, at 23,000 bales, compares to 21,900
bales in 1999. Producers harvested 37,000 acres, compared with 28,000 acres harvested in 1999. New seeding of
alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures was 70,000 acres, down 10,000 acres from last year. Summer potato production totaled
986,000 hundredweight.

CORN: The 2000 corn for grain production was estimated at 9.97 billion bushels, up 6 percent from the 1999 crop and
is the second largest crop behind 1994's record production of 10.1 billion bushels (see table 2). Production is down 1
percent from the November 1 forecast due to lower than expected yields realized in the heart of the Corn Belt, as well as
increased abandonment in the Central Plains and Southeast. The U.S. yield of 137.1 bushels per acre, was up 3.3
bushels from last year and is the second largest yield on record. Planted area totaled 79.5 million acres, 3 percent more
than in 1999. Acres harvested for grain, at 72.7 million acres, were also 3 percent above 1999 and are the most
harvested since 1985.
SORGHUM: Production of grain sorghum in 2000 was estimated at 470 million bushels, up 1 percent from the
November forecast and down 21 percent from 1999. Area harvested for grain was estimated at 7.72 million acres, down
10 percent from 1999. Average grain yield, at 60.9 bushels per acre, was 8.8 bushels below the 1999 average yield.
Kansas continues to lead the Nation in sorghum planted, harvested acres, and production for both grain and silage.
SOYBEANS: Production of soybeans totaled 2.77 billion bushels in 2000, down slightly from the November 1 forecast,
but 4 percent above 1999. The 2000 production is the highest on record, followed by the 1998 crop of 2.74 billion
bushels. The average yield per acre in 2000 is estimated at 38.1 bushels, 0.1 bushel above the November 1 forecast,
and 1.5 bushels above the 1999 yield. Planted area for the U.S., at 74.5 million acres, was up 1 percent from 1999 and
the largest planted acreage on record. Harvested area totaled 72.7 million acres, up slightly from 1999.
ALL WHEAT: Production of wheat for 2000 is estimated at 2.22 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the level published
in the "Small Grains 2000 Summary," and 3 percent below the 1999 level. All of the production decline from the last
estimate is in North Dakota, due to a reduction in both grain area and yield for Durum and other spring wheat. U.S.
Durum wheat production is down 5 percent from the last estimate, other spring wheat is down 2 percent, and all winter
wheat is unchanged.

Wheat seeded in Kansas in the fall of 2000 for the 2001 crop totaled 9.9 million acres, up 100,000 acres from the
2000 crop. This is the second year in a row that the acreage seeded was below 10 million acres. See table 3 for
Kansas wheat seeded by district for recent years. Kansas farmers started seeding wheat in early September.
However progress was slow as some producers were waiting for rain before planting. By the middle of September
only 4 percent of the crop was seeded and top soil moisture supplies for nearly three-quarters of the State were
rated very short. Scattered rains were received the last half of September through early October. Dry weather
returned by mid-October and seeding had progressed to 69 percent complete with 24 percent of the crop
emerged. In late October, rain fell across the State with some areas reporting heavy rains. On November
5, 92 percent of the acreage was seeded and 81 percent of the crop had emerged. Fifty-one percent of the wheat
crop was rated in good to excellent condition. Seeding continue during November and by the 26th, 98 percent of
the acreage was seeded, 92 percent of the crop had emerged, and 55 percent of the crop was rated in the good
to excellent conditions.
Winter wheat seeded in the United States for harvest in 2001 is estimated at 41.3 million acres, down 5 percent
from 2000. This is the lowest planted acreage since 1971. Class breakdowns approximate: hard red winter, 28.9
million acres; soft red winter, 8.9 million; and white winter, 3.5 million.

(see table 4). Wheat stored at off-farm locations (mills, elevators, warehouses, and processors) totaled 242.5
million bushels, which accounted for 89 percent of the total grain stocks.
Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 129.5 million bushels, 25 percent below last year's level. Off-farm stocks
accounted for 94.5 million bushels and on-farm stocks 35.0 million bushels.
Kansas corn stocks in all locations, at 263.0 million bushels, were virtually unchanged from last Decem- ber. Off-
farm stocks were 163.0 million bushels, which accounted for 62 percent of the total corn stocks. On-farm
stocks at 100.0 million bushels, were unchanged from last December.
Off-farm oat stocks were 519,000 bushels, down 39 percent from last December.
Kansas soybeans in all locations totaled 48.3 million bushels, a 28 percent decrease from December 1999. Off-
farm stocks, at 35.3 million bushels, were down 25 percent from last year and accounted for 73 percent of the total
soybean stocks. On-farm stocks totaled 13.0 million bushels, down 7.0 million bushels from the previous year's
stocks.
