STOCKS
Kansas corn production is expected to total 409.2 million bushels, 4 percent above the previous
forecast but 2 percent below last year's crop. Acreage harvested for grain, at 3.10 million acres, is
unchanged from the previous forecast but down 3 percent from 2000. Corn yields are expected to
average 132 bushels per acre, up 5 bushels from September 1 and 2 bushels above the previous
year.
Sorghum grain production is forecast at 232.5 million bushels, up 23 percent from last year. Kansas
remains first in the nation in sorghum production. Yields are expected to average 62 bushels per
acre, unchanged from last month but up 3 bushels from last year's yield. Acreage for harvest as
grain is 3.75 million acres, unchanged from September 1 but up 550,000 acres from 2000.
Soybean production in Kansas is expected to total 87.0 million bushels, unchanged from September 1 but 74 percent
above last year's crop. Acreage for harvest is expected to total 2.90 million acres, unchanged from September 1 but
400,000 acres above last year. Yields are expected to average 30 bushels per acre, unchanged from September 1 but 10
bushels above 2000.
Kansas sunflower production is forecast at 407.0 million pounds, up 50 percent from last year. Harvested acreage, at
318,000, is up 89,000 acres from last year. If realized, both harvested acres and production will be record highs. The
yield is expected to average 1,280 pounds per acre, up 8 percent from last year.
All hay production is estimated to total 7.56 million tons, up 16 percent from 2000. Kansas acreage harvested is 3.3
million acres, up 500,000 acres from last year.
Kansas wheat production for 2001 is estimated at 328.0 million bushels, down 6 percent from 2000. Yield is estimated at
40.0 bushels per acre, 3 bushels above the 2000 yield. Acres harvested for grain totaled 8.2 million acres, 1.2 million
acres less than the 2000 harvest. A total of 9.8 million acres were planted to wheat for harvest in 2001, unchanged from
the previous year. Oat production is 2.12 million bushels in 2001, down 4 percent from 2000. Final yield is estimated at
53.0 bushels per acre, 9 bushels higher than the 2000 yield. Grain was harvested from 40,000 of the 100,000 acres
planted. Barley production totaled 400,000 bushels for 2001, up 155,000 bushels from the 2000 crop. Yields averaged
50.0 bushels per acre, 15 bushels above last year. Grain was harvested from 8,000 of the 9,000 acres planted.
Estimates of Kansas corn, sorghum, and soybean production by district are shown in table 2 on the following page. Wheat
county and district data are not included in this report but will be released in early 2002.

Corn grain production is forecast at 9.43 billion bushels, up 2 percent from last month, but down 5 percent from 2000.
Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 136.3 bushels per acre, up 2.8 bushels from last
month. If realized, this would be the lowest production since 1997 but the third highest yield on record. Acreage for
harvest is estimated at 69.2 million acres, unchanged from last month but down 5 percent from 2000.
Sorghum grain production is forecast at 536 million bushels, down slightly from September but up 14 percent from 2000.
Area harvested and to be harvested, at 8.78 million acres, is unchanged from last month but 14 percent higher than 2000.
The U.S. yield is forecast at 61.0 bushels per acre, down 0.2 bushel from last month but up 0.1 bushel from last year.
Yield forecasts from September remained unchanged for Kansas and Texas, which account for 70 percent of the U.S.
production.
Soybean production is forecast at a record high 2.91 billion bushels, up 3 percent from September 1 and 5 percent above
2000. The yield forecast, at 39.2 bushels per acre, up 1.0 bushel from last month and 1.1 bushels above 2000.
Forecasted yields are up in the Ohio Valley and Mississippi Valley, as September weather provided excellent conditions for
crop development. Acreage for harvest is estimated at a record high 74.1 million acres, unchanged from September 1, but
up 2 percent from 2000.
Kansas wheat stocks in all positions on September 1 totaled 377.3 million bushels, 2 percent less than last year's total.
Wheat stored in off-farm locations (mills, elevators, warehouses, and processors) totaled 332.3 million bushels, a
decrease of 3 percent from a year ago. Wheat stored off the farm accounted for 88 percent of all wheat stocks. Wheat in
farm storage totaled 45.0 million bushels, up 5 percent from last September.
Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 22.9 million bushels, down from 34.9 million bushels last year. Off-farm holdings of
18.9 million bushels were down from 28.9 million bushels last year. Sorghum grain stored off the farm accounted for 83
percent of the total sorghum stocks. On-farm stocks of 4.0 million bushels were down from a year ago.
Corn stocks in all locations, at 48.7 million bushels, were down 8 percent from a year ago. Off-farm corn stocks of 37.7
million bushels decreased from 45.5 million bushels last year and accounted for 77 percent of total corn stocks. On-farm
stocks of 11.0 million bushels were 47 percent above last September.
Kansas soybeans stored in all positions totaled 7.4 million bushels, down 2.5 million bushels from last year. Off-farm
locations held 5.8 million bushels, down 2.1 million bushels from last year, and accounted for 78 percent of total soybean
stocks. On-farm stocks of 1.6 million bushels are 400,000 bushels below last year.
Oats stored at off-farm locations totaled 0.6 million bushels.
Barley stored at off-farm locations totaled 132,000 bushels.
