SMALL GRAINS SUMMARY

Kansas wheat production for 2001 is estimated at 328.0 million bushels, down 5 percent from the August forecast and down 6 percent from 2000. Yield is estimated at 40.0 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from the August forecast but 3 bushels above the 2000 yield. Acres harvested for grain totaled 8.2 million acres, down 200,000 acres from the previous forecast and 1.2 million acres less than the 2000 harvest. A total of 9.8 million acres were planted to wheat in 2001, unchanged from the previous year.

Oat production is 2.12 million bushels in 2001, down 4 percent from 2000. Final yield is estimated at 53.0 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from the August forecast but 9 bushels higher than the 2000 yield. Grain was harvested from 40,000 of the 100,000 acres planted.

Barley production totaled 400,000 bushels for 2001, up 155,000 bushels from the 2000 crop. Yields averaged 50.0 bushels per acre, 15 bushels above last year. Grain was harvested from 8,000 of the 9,000 acres planted.

GRAIN STOCKS

Kansas wheat stocks in all positions on September 1 totaled 377.3 million bushels, 2 percent less than last year's total. Wheat stored in off-farm locations (mills, elevators, warehouses, and processors) totaled 332.3 million bushels, a decrease of 3 percent from a year ago. Wheat stored off the farm accounted for 88 percent of all wheat stocks. Wheat in farm storage totaled 45.0 million bushels, up 5 percent from last September.

Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 22.9 million bushels, down from 34.9 million bushels on hand last year. Off-farm holdings of 18.9 million bushels were down from 28.9 million bushels last year. Sorghum grain stored off the farm accounted for 83 percent of the total sorghum stocks. On-farm stocks of 4.0 million bushels were down 2.0 million bushels from a year ago.

Corn stocks in all locations, at 48.7 million bushels, were down 8 percent from a year ago. Off-farm corn stocks of 37.7 million bushels decreased from 45.5 million bushels last year and accounted for 77 percent of total corn stocks. On-farm stocks of 11.0 million bushels were 47 percent above last September.

Kansas soybeans stored in all positions totaled 7.4 million bushels, down 2.5 million bushels from last year. Off- farm locations held 5.8 million bushels, down 2.1 million bushels from last year, and accounted for 78 percent of total soybean stocks. On-farm stocks of 1.6 million bushels are 400,000 bushels below last year.

Oats stored at off-farm locations totaled 0.6 million bushels.

Barley stored at off-farm locations totaled 132,000 bushels.
