tons from the previous year. Alfalfa production was up 12 percent from the 2000 crop of 3.69 million tons, while other hay
production was up 35 percent from last year. Alfalfa acreage harvested was unchanged from 2000. Other hay harvested
increased 500,000 acres compared with the year earlier.
New seeding of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures was 160,000 acres, up 90,000 acres from last year.
WHEAT: Wheat production was 328.0 million bushels, down 6 percent from the 2000 crop. Acres planted totaled 9.8
million, unchanged from 2000. Acreage harvested, at 8.2 million acres, was down 13 percent but yield was 3 bushels
above 2000.
OTHER CROPS: Dry bean production, at 259,000 cwt., was down 30,000 cwt. from 2000. Sunflower production totaled
391.9 million pounds, 49 percent above last year's revised production of 271.0 million pounds. Cotton production, at
23,000 bales, compares to 22,200 bales in 2000. Producers harvested 37,000 acres of cotton, unchanged from the acres
harvested in 2000. Summer potato production totaled 720,000 hundredweight.

CORN: The 2001 corn for grain production was estimated at 9.51 billion bushels, down 4 percent from the revised 9.92
billion bushels in 2000. This is the fourth largest crop behind 1994's record production of 10.1 billion bushels followed by
2000's and 1998's production. Production is down less than 0.4 percent from the November 1 forecast due to lower than
expected grain harvested in the heart of the Corn Belt and throughout the West. The U.S. yield of 138.2 bushels per acre,
was up 0.2 bushels from last year and is the second largest yield on record. Planted area totaled 75.8 million acres, 5
percent below last year. Acres harvested for grain, at 68.8 million acres, were also 5 percent below 2000. Farmers
harvested 6.15 million acres for silage, a 1 percent increase from last year.
SORGHUM: Production of grain sorghum in 2001 was estimated at 515 million bushels, down 4 percent from the
November forecast and up 9 percent from 2000. Area harvested for grain was estimated at 8.58 million acres, up 11
percent from 2000. Average grain yield, at 59.9 bushels per acre, was 1.0 bushel below the 2000 average yield. Kansas
continues to lead the Nation in sorghum planted, harvested acres, and production for both grain and silage.
SOYBEANS: Production of soybeans totaled 2.89 billion bushels in 2001, down 1 percent from the November 1 forecast,
but 5 percent above 2000. The 2001 production is a record high, followed by last year's 2.76 billion bushels. The average
yield per acre in 2001 is estimated at 39.6 bushels, 0.2 bushel above the November 1 forecast, and 1.5 bushels above the
2000 yield. Planted area for the U.S., at 74.1 million acres, was down slightly from 2000. Harvested area totaled 73.0
million acres, up 1 percent from 2000 and is the largest harvested acreage on record.
ALL WHEAT: Production of wheat for 2001 is estimated at 1.96 billion bushels, unchanged from the level published in the
"Small Grains 2001 Summary," but down 12 percent from 2000. This is the lowest production since 1988. Grain area was
48.7 million acres, down 8 percent from last year and the smallest area harvested since 1972. The U.S. yield was 40.2
bushels per acre, down 1.8 bushels from a year earlier. U.S. Durum wheat production is down 24 percent from last year,
other spring wheat is down 8 percent, and all winter wheat is the lowest level since 1978.

Wheat seeded in Kansas in the fall of 2001 for the 2002 crop totaled 9.4 million acres, down 400,000 acres from
the 2001 crop. This is the lowest acreage seeded since 1957. See table 3 for Kansas wheat seeded by district
for recent years. Seeding of wheat acres began the second week of September and progressed ahead of normal
through completion. Fifty-five percent was seeded and 22 percent was emerged by the end of September, ahead
of the 5 year average of 33 percent and 14 percent, respectively. Dry conditions, particularly in the central and
western districts during October, hampered wheat emergence and caused condition to decline. Wheat seeding
was complete by the second week of November. Light rains
the
last
half of November were not
sufficient
to
improve wheat condition. Wheat condition had dropped from 73 percent good-to-excellent in mid-October to 47
percent good-to-excellent
by the first of December
. Ninety-nine percent of the crop was emerged by the first of
December.
Winter wheat seeded in the United States for harvest in 2002 is estimated at 41.0 million acres, down fractionally
from 2001. This is the lowest planted acreage since 1971. Class breakdowns are: hard red winter, 29.3 million
acres; soft red winter, 8.3 million; and white winter, 3.4 million acres.

were down 7 percent from the year earlier.
Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 177.8 million bushels, 38 percent above last year's level. Off-farm stocks
accounted for 139.8 million bushels and on-farm stocks 38.0 million bushels.
Kansas corn stocks in all locations, at 262.0 million bushels, were down 2 percent from last December.
Off-farm
stocks were 167.0 million bushels,
which
accounted for 64 percent of the total corn stocks. On-farm stocks at 95.0
million bushels, were down 5 percent from last December.
Off-farm oat stocks were 393,000 bushels, down 27 percent from last December.
Kansas soybeans in all locations totaled 68.9 million bushels, a 43 percent increase from December 2000. Off-
farm stocks, at 49.9 million bushels, were up 42 percent from last year and accounted for 72 percent of the total
soybean stocks. On-farm stocks totaled 19.0 million bushels, up 6.0 million bushels from the previous year's
