million acres, down 250,000 acres from last year.
Kansas wheat production for 2002 is estimated at 267.3 million bushels, up 1 percent from the August forecast but down
19 percent from 2001. Yield is estimated at 33.0 bushels per acre, unchanged from the August forecast but 7 bushels
below the 2001 yield. Acres harvested for grain totaled 8.10 million acres, up 100,000 acres from the previous forecast but
down 100,000 from the 2001 harvest. A total of 9.60 million acres were planted to wheat for harvest in 2002, up 100,000
acres from the August forecast but down 200,000 acres from the previous year.
Estimates of Kansas corn, sorghum, and soybean production by district are shown in table 2 on the following page. Wheat
county and district data are not included in this report but will be released in early 2003.

Corn grain production is forecast at 8.97 billion bushels, up 1 percent from last month, but down 6 percent from 2001.
Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 127.2 bushels per acre, up 1.8 bushels from last
month. If realized, this would be the lowest production since 1995. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 70.5 million acres,
unchanged from last month but up 3 percent from 2001.
Sorghum grain production is forecast at 387 million bushels, up slightly from September but down 25 percent from 2001.
Area harvested and to be harvested, at 7.53 million acres, is unchanged from last month but 12 percent lower than 2001.
The U.S. yield is forecast at 51.4 bushels per acre, up .4 bushel from last month but down 8.5 bushel from last year. The
yield forecast from September remained unchanged for Kansas but was up 2.0 bushels for Texas; the two states account
for 72 percent of the U.S. production.
Soybean production is forecast at 2.65 billion bushels, virtually unchanged from September 1 but 8 percent below 2001.
The yield forecast, at 37.0 bushels per acre, is unchanged from last month but 2.6 bushels below 2001. Forecasted yields
are up in the central Great Plains as September weather provided beneficial showers. Acreage for harvest is estimated at
71.8 million acres, unchanged from September 1 but 2 percent below 2001.
Kansas wheat stocks in all positions on September 1 totaled 255.3 million bushels, 32 percent less than last year's total.
Wheat stored in off-farm locations (mills, elevators, warehouses, and processors) totaled 219.3 million bushels, a
decrease of 34 percent from a year ago. Wheat stored off the farm accounted for 86 percent of all wheat stocks. Wheat
in farm storage totaled 36.0 million bushels, down 20 percent from last September.
Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 29.5 million bushels, up from 22.9 million bushels last year. Off-farm holdings of
25.9 million bushels were up from 18.9 million bushels last year. Sorghum grain stored off the farm accounted for 88
percent of the total sorghum stocks. On-farm stocks of 3.6 million bushels were down 400,000 bushels from a year ago.
Corn stocks in all locations, at 52.9 million bushels, were up 9 percent from a year ago. Off-farm corn stocks of 37.4
million bushels were down slightly from 37.7 million bushels last year and accounted for 71 percent of total corn stocks.
On-farm stocks of 15.5 million bushels were 41 percent above last September.
Kansas soybeans stored in all positions totaled 5.3 million bushels, down 2.1 million bushels from last year. Off-farm
locations held 4.2 million bushels, down 1.6 million bushels from last year, and accounted for 79 percent of total soybean
stocks. On-farm stocks of 1.1 million bushels are 500,000 bushels below last year.
Oats stored at off-farm locations totaled 778,000 bushels, up 30 percent from September 2001.
Barley stored at off-farm locations totaled 62,000 bushels, compared with 132,000 a year earlier.
