The primary variety grown in Kansas is Pinto.
United States production of dry beans is estimated at 22.8 million cwt. for 2003, down 3
percent from the November forecast and 24 percent below 2002. Area for harvest is
estimated at 1.36 million acres, 4 percent below the previous estimate and 21 percent below a year ago. The
average yield, estimated at 1,678 pounds per acre, is 13 pounds higher than the November forecast but 58
pounds lower than a year ago.
