Kansas Dry Bean Production Up

Kansas dry bean production is estimated at 231,000 hundredweight (cwt.), up 44 percent from the 2002 crop. Yield is estimated at 2,100 pounds per acre, 1,000 pounds above the 1,100 pounds produced per acre last year. Harvested acres, at 11,000, are down 3,500 acres from the 14,500 acres harvested in 2002.

The primary variety grown in Kansas is Pinto.

United States production of dry beans is estimated at 22.8 million cwt. for 2003, down 3 percent from the November forecast and 24 percent below 2002. Area for harvest is estimated at 1.36 million acres, 4 percent below the previous estimate and 21 percent below a year ago. The average yield, estimated at 1,678 pounds per acre, is 13 pounds higher than the November forecast but 58 pounds lower than a year ago.

Kansas Farm Marketings
