If realized, both the yield and production would be the second largest on record. The record for both was set in 1994 when production was estimated at 10.1 billion bushels and yield was 138.6 bushels per

acre. Acreage for harvest as grain is estimated at 71.8 million acres, down slightly from August but up 4 percent from 2002.

Production of sorghum grain is forecast at 410 million bushels, down 9 percent from August but up 11 percent from 2002. Area harvested and to be harvested for grain, at 8.04 million acres, is 2 percent below last month but up 10 percent from 2002. The forecast U.S. yield, at 51.0 bushels per acre, is down 3.4 bushels from August but up 0.3 bushel from 2002.

Soybean production is forecast at 2.64 billion bushels, down 8 percent from August 1 and 3 percent below 2002. Based on September 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 36.4 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from August. If realized, this would be the lowest production since 1996. Acreage for harvest is forecast at 72.6 million acres, unchanged from August 1 but up 1 percent from 2002.

All wheat production is placed at 2.29 billion bushels, unchanged from the August forecast but 42 percent above 2002. The U.S. yield is forecast at 43.5 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month.

Kansas rose to 5th place among the 50 states as an exporter of agricultural products during fiscal year (FY) 2002, according to data released by the Economics Research Service, USDA, and Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service. Exports from five of the top ten states increased. The total value of Kansas exports, at over $3.0 billion, is up 1 percent from the previous fiscal year. Most of the increase came from the Soybeans & Products , Feed Grains & Products, and Animal Fats categories. Kansas accounted for 5.6 percent of the $53.3 billion U.S. agricultural exports in FY 2002.

Kansas was ranked in 1st place for Wheat & Products and Feeds & Fodders. The export numbers show Kansas rank-ing 2nd Nationally for Live Animals & Meat, Hides & Skins, and Animal Fats. Other top ten rankings for Kansas were Sunflower Seed & Oil (3rd place with $25.0 million), Feed Grains & Products (5th place with $519.5 million), and Soybeans & Products (10th place with $221.4 million).

Live Animals & Meat comprised 25 percent of the total Kansas exports and 12 percent of all U.S. Live Animal & Meat exports. Wheat & Products accounted for 23 percent of the State total and 15 percent of the National All Wheat & Products exports. Feed Grains & Products tallied 17 and 8 percent of the State and U.S. exports, respectively.
