SMALL GRAINS SUMMARY

Kansas wheat production for 2003 is estimated at 480.0 million bushels, up 1 percent from the August forecast and up 80 percent from 2002. Yield is estimated at 48.0 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from the August forecast but 15 bushels above the 2002 yield. Acres harvested for grain totaled 10.0 million acres, up 300,000 acres from the previous forecast and up 1.9 million from the 2002 harvest. A total of 10.4 million acres were planted to wheat for harvest in 2003, up 100,000 acres from the August forecast and up 800,000 acres from the previous year.

Oat production is 4.55 million bushels in 2003, up 46 percent from 2002. Final yield is estimated at 65.0 bushels per acre, 13 bushels higher than the 2002 yield. Grain was harvested from 70,000 of the 140,000 acres planted.

Barley production totaled 456,000 bushels for 2003, up 92 percent from the 2002 crop. Yields averaged 57.0 bushels per acre, 23 bushels above last year. Grain was harvested from 8,000 of the 9,000 acres planted.

GRAIN STOCKS

Kansas wheat stocks in all positions on September 1 totaled 369.5 million bushels, 38 percent more than last year's total. Wheat stored in off-farm locations (mills, elevators, warehouses, and processors) totaled 326.5 million bushels, an increase of 41 percent from a year ago. Wheat stored off the farm accounted for 88 percent of all wheat stocks. Wheat in farm storage totaled 43.0 million bushels, up 19 percent from last September.

Sorghum grain in all positions totaled 23.2 million bushels, down from 31.2 million bushels last year. Off-farm holdings of 20.5 million bushels were down from 27.6 million bushels last year. Sorghum grain stored off the farm accounted for 88 percent of the total sorghum stocks. On-farm stocks of 2.7 million bushels were down 900,000 bushels from a year ago.

Corn stocks in all locations, at 40.5 million bushels, were down 23 percent from a year ago. Off-farm corn stocks of 24.5 million bushels were down from 36.8 million bushels last year and accounted for 60 percent of total corn stocks. On-farm stocks of 16.0 million bushels were 3 percent above last September.

Kansas soybeans stored in all positions totaled 3.6 million bushels, down 1.5 million bushels from last year. Off- farm locations held 2.4 million bushels, down 1.6 million bushels from last year, and accounted for 67 percent of total soybean stocks. On-farm stocks of 1.2 million bushels are 100,000 bushels above last year.

Oats stored at off-farm locations totaled 1.2 million bushels, up 62 percent from September 2002.

Barley stored at off-farm locations totaled 69,000 bushels, compared with 62,000 a year earlier.
