SOYBEANS: Production of soybeans totaled 2.42 billion bushels in 2003, down 1 percent from the November forecast
and 12 percent below the 2002 level. This is the lowest production level since 1996. The average yield per acre in 2003 is
estimated at 33.4 bushels per acre, 0.4 bushel below the November 1 forecast and 4.6 bushels below the 2002 final yield.
This is the lowest yield since 1993. Planted area for the U.S., at 73.4 million acres, is down 1 percent from 2002.
Harvested area totaled 72.3 million acres, down slightly from 2002 and the previous forecast.
ALL WHEAT: Production of wheat for 2003 is estimated at 2.34 billion bushels, unchanged from the Small Grain 2003
Summary, but 44 percent above 2002. Grain area is 52.8 million acres, up 15 percent from last year. The U.S. yield is
44.2 bushels per acre, up 8.9 bushels from a year earlier. U.S. Durum wheat production is up 22 percent from last year,

Wheat seeded in Kansas in the fall of 2003 for the 2004 crop totaled 9.9 million acres, down 500,000 acres from the 2003
crop. Kansas wheat seeded by district for recent years is shown in the table below. Seeding of wheat acres began the second
week of September and progressed ahead of normal through completion. Widespread showers, heavy in some areas, the
second weeks of both September and October helped improve soil moisture for the seeding of wheat. Despite the rain, soil
moisture conditions remained dry throughout the fall and as of November 30, 65 percent of the topsoil moisture was rated short
to very short and 69 percent of the subsoil was rated short to very short.
The early seeding of wheat also led to emergence progress being ahead of normal until mid-October. Progress until the end
of November resumed a near-normal pace. Due to dry conditions, some fields in the northwest district still had not emerged
by the first of December.
Winter wheat seeded in the United States for harvest in 2004 is estimated at 43.5 million acres, down 3 percent from 2003.
Approximate class acreage breakdowns are: hard red winter, 31.0 million acres; soft red winter, 8.3 million; and white winter,
4.2 million acres.
