KANSAS RANKED 5TH IN
AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS

Kansas ranked fifth among the 50 states as an exporter of agricultural products during fiscal year (FY) 2000, according to data released by the Economics Research Service, USDA, and Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service. Exports from eight out of the top ten states rose. The total value of Kansas exports, at $3,060.1 million, is up 8 percent from the previous fiscal year. Most of the increase came from hides & skins and live animals & meat categories, along with increases in sunflowers & oils, seeds, feeds & fodders, and soybeans & products. Kansas accounted for 6.0 percent of the $50,911.0 million national total of agricultural exports in FY 2000.

Kansas managed to retain the rank of first place in the export sales of wheat and wheat products, even though showing a decline of nearly $100 million in value. The $721.5 million recorded this year is just 90 percent of the previous year's export value. In addition, Kansas regained first rank in hides & skins, surpassing Nebraska and Texas. Kansas placed second in export sales of live animals & meats and animal fats. Wheat comprised 24 percent of the total Kansas exports and 20 percent of the total wheat exported by the U.S., while hides & skins comprised 9 percent and 19 percent, respectively. Live animals & meats accounted for 32 percent and 15 percent, while fats, oils, and greases accounted for 3 percent and 19 percent, respectively.

U.S. AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS

UP 4 PERCENT

The United States exported $50.9 billion of agricultural commodities in FY 2000, up 4 percent from 1999. Export share estimates placed California at the top for the sixteenth consecutive year. Iowa ranked second, followed by Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois, Minnesota, Washington, Indiana, and Arkansas. Agricultural export estimates by State are based on the assumption that if a State contributes a certain percentage of U.S. production, it contributes a similar percentage of export revenues. When appropriate, however, supplemental data (customs district data, domestic use data, and the Census of Agriculture data, for example) were used to adjust the export share.
