KANSAS RANKED 6TH IN
AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS
Kansas ranked sixth among the 50 states as an exporter of agricultural products during fiscal year (FY) 2004, according to data released by the Economics Research Service, USDA, and Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service. Exports from six out of the top ten states increased. The total value of Kansas exports, at $2.9 billion, is down 2 percent from the previous fiscal year. Most of the value decrease came from the Live Animals & Meat, Hides & Skins, and Feeds & Fodders categories. Kansas accounted for 4.7 percent of the $62.3 billion U.S. agricultural exports in FY 2004.
Kansas was ranked in first place for Wheat & Products. The export numbers show Kansas ranking second in the Nation for Feed & Fodders, Hides & Skins, and Animal Fats. Other top ten rankings for Kansas were Live Animals & Meat (third place with $343.2 million), Seed (third place with $66.3 million), Sunflower Seed & Oil (third place with $13.1 million), and Feed Grains & Products (sixth place with $401.5 million). Wheat & Products accounted for 39 percent of the State total and 17 percent of the National All Wheat & Products exports. Live Animals & Meat comprised 12 percent of the total Kansas exports and 8 percent of all U.S. Live Animal & Meat exports. Feed Grains & Products tallied 14 and 5 percent of the State and National exports, respectively.
U.S. AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS
UP 11 PERCENT
The United States exported $62.3 billion of agricultural commodities in FY 2004, up 11 percent from 2003. California continued to lead the Nation in agricultural exports at $9.2 billion. Iowa ranked second, followed by Illinois, Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Arkansas, North Dakota, and Washington. Agricultural export estimates by State are based on the assumption that if a State contributes a certain percentage of U.S. production, it contributes a similar percentage of export revenues. When appropriate, however, supplemental data (Customs district data, domestic use data, and the Census of Agriculture data, for example) were used to adjust the export share.
