KANSAS 6TH IN AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS

Kansas ranked sixth among the 50 states as an exporter of agricultural products during fiscal year (FY) 1997, according to data released by the Economics Research Service, USDA, and Kansas Agricultural Statistics. The total value of Kansas exports, at $2,650.3 million, is a 15 percent decrease from the previous fiscal year. The decrease came primarily from the total of wheat and wheat products category, along with decreases in feed grains & products, live animals & meat, and hides and skins. Kansas accounted for 4.6 percent of the $57,365.1 million national total of agricultural exports in FY 1997.

Kansas regained the rank of first place in the export sales of wheat and wheat products, with a value of $498.2 million, while dropping to second in export sales of hides and skins. Wheat comprised 19 percent of the total Kansas exports and 12 percent of the total wheat exported by the U.S. Kansas also ranks second among the 50 states in fats, oils, & greases, with a value of $85.0 million, while accounting for 3 percent of the total Kansas exports and 16 percent of the U.S. exports.

U.S. AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS

DOWN 4 PERCENT

The United States exported $57.4 billion of agricultural commodities in FY 1997, down 4 percent from 1996. Export share estimates placed California at the top for the thirteenth consecutive year. Iowa ranked second, followed by Illinois, Nebraska, Texas, Kansas, Minnesota, Arkansas, Washington, and Indiana. Agri- cultural export estimates by State are based on the assumption that if a State contributes a certain percentage of U.S. production, it contributes a similar percentage of export revenues. When appropriate, however, supplemental data (customs district data, domestic use data, and the Census of Agriculture data, for example) were used to adjust the export share.
