KANSAS 6TH IN AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS

Kansas ranked sixth among the 50 states as an exporter of agricultural products during fiscal year (FY) 1998, according to data released by the Economics Research Service, USDA, and Kansas Agricultural Statistics. The total value of Kansas exports, at $2,857.2 million, is a 9 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. The increase came primarily from the total of wheat and wheat products category, along with increases in live animals & meat, soybeans and products, feeds and fodders, and fats, oils, and greases. Kansas accounted for 5.2 percent of the $55,093.8 million national total of agricultural exports in FY 1998.

Kansas retained the rank of first place in the export sales of wheat and wheat products, with a value of $773.8 million, while regaining second place in export sales of live animals and meats. Wheat comprised 27 percent of the total Kansas exports and 20 percent of the total wheat exported by the U.S, while live animals and meats comprised 25 percent and 13 percent, respectively. Kansas also ranks second among the 50 states in hides and skins, and fats, oils, & greases, with a value of $228.7 million, and $117.3 million, respectively. Hides and skins accounting for 8 percent of the total Kansas exports and 17 percent of the U.S. exports, while fats, oils, and greases accounted for 4 percent and 18 percent, respectively.

U.S. AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS DOWN 6 PERCENT

The United States exported $55.1 billion of agricultural commodities in FY 1998, down 6 percent from 1997. Export share estimates placed California at the top for the fourteenth consecutive year. Iowa ranked second, followed by Illinois, Texas. Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Washington, Arkansas, and Indiana. Agricultural export estimates by State are based on the assumption that if a State contributes a certain percentage of U.S. production, it contributes a similar percentage of export revenues. When appropriate, however, supplemental data (customs district data, domestic use data, and the Census of Agriculture data, for example) were used to adjust the export share.
