KANSAS MOVES UP TO 4TH IN
AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS

Kansas ranked fourth among the 50 states as an exporter of agricultural products during fiscal year (FY) 1999, according to data released by the Economics Research Service, USDA, and Kansas Agricultural Statistics. Exports from eight out of the top ten states decreased, with the exception of Kansas and Washington. The total value of Kansas exports, at $2,823.7 million, is a 1 percent increase from the previous fiscal year and moved Kansas up from the sixth place ranking in 1998. The increase came primarily from the total of wheat and wheat products category, along with increases in total feed grains and live animals and meats. Kansas accounted for 5.8 percent of the $49,102.1 million national total of agricultural exports in FY 1999.

Kansas retained the rank of first place in the export sales of wheat and wheat products, with a value of $805.5 million, while placing second place in export sales of live animals and meats, hides and skins, and animal fats. Wheat comprised 29 percent of the total Kansas exports and 20 percent of the total wheat exported by the U.S, while live animals and meats comprised 27 percent and 14 percent, respectively. Hides & skins accounted for 7 percent and 18 percent, while fats, oils, and greases accounted for 4 percent and 20 percent, respectively.

U.S. AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS

DOWN 9 PERCENT

The United States exported $49.1 billion of agricultural commodities in FY 1999, down 9 percent from 1998. Export share estimates placed California at the top for the fifteenth consecutive year. Iowa ranked second, followed by Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois, Texas, Minnesota, Washington, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Agricultural export estimates by State are based on the assumption that if a State contributes a certain percentage of U.S. production, it contributes a similar percentage of export revenues. When appropriate, however, supplemental data (customs district data, domestic use data, and the Census of Agriculture data, for example) were used to adjust the export share.
