ASGROW SOYBEANS POPULAR IN 1998

According to Kansas Agricultural Statistics, the most popular variety of soybeans planted in Kansas for the 1998 crop year was Asgrow 3701. This variety accounted for 3.6 percent of the soybeans planted in Kansas. Asgrow's 5545 variety was the second most popular seed and was planted on 2.1 percent of the state's soybean acreage.

In addition to these top two varieties, Pioneer 9521 and 9421, Asgrow AG3834, and three public varieties (Williams 82, Hutcheson, and KS5292) were planted on more than 1 percent of the soybean acreage in the State (see map below). The western areas of the state had too few reports to allow publishing of district data.

A breakdown by brands (see Table 1), shows Asgrow, Pioneer, Public, Dekalb, Midland, and Novartis each had over five percent of the planted soybeans in Kansas. Over 65 percent of the soybeans planted in the State for 1998 were varieties of these top six brands (see Table 2).

The average seeding rate reported by producers across the state was 171,262 seeds per acre (see Table 3). The most common row spacing in all districts was 30 inches with slightly more than 40 percent of the acreage planted using narrow rows (see Table 4).
