All Fruit There were 125,860 acres of fruit on commercial operations at the end of 2003. That compares with 128,810 acres at the end of 2000. A decline in apple acres from 2000 to 2003 was partially offset by increases in grape, tart cherry, and blueberry acres. There were 2,245 commercial fruit farms at the end of 2003. A commercial fruit farm was defined as having at least one acre of any tree fruit or grapes or one half acre of any berry. The geographic concentration of fruit varied substantially. The top five apple counties accounted for 59 percent of the total acres. The comparable figures for tart cherries and blueberries were 78 percent and 96 percent, respectively. The counties with the most acres of fruit, in order, were VanBuren, Berrien, Leelanau, Oceana, and Kent. They contained 60 percent of the acres of fruit in Michigan.
