Cash Receipts

Preliminary cash receipts from 1996 marketings of Michigan crops, livestock and livestock products totaled $3.64 billion. Total cash receipts were virtually unchanged from the previous year, placing Michigan 20th nationally. Crop cash receipts declined 4 percent from 1995, to $2.19 billion. Sales of crops were mixed with increases for apples, potatoes, and cherries, while wheat, sugarbeets, and hay declined. Livestock cash receipts, at $1.45 billion, were up 8 percent from a year ago. Increased sales of dairy products, hogs, and eggs contributed to the increase.
Preliminary U.S. data shows that total cash receipts were up 9 percent to $201.9 billion for 1996. Crop cash receipts increased 10 percent to $109.1 billion a new record high. Livestock increased 3 percent to $92.9 billion.

Farm Income

Michigan's 1996 agricultural sector output totaled $3.82 billion, down 5 percent from 1995, but up 1 percent from 1994. Net farm income in 1996 declined dramatically to $376 million in 1996, down 43 percent from the previous year. The decline in income was primarily attributed to lower production of most crops, dropping 14 percent from 1995's level to $2.01 billion in 1996. The value of inventory adjustment of a negative $192 million resulted from the large 1995 crop which was marketed in 1996. Livestock output at $1.42 billion, posted an increase of 8 percent. Dairy products totaled $808 million, an increase of 13 percent. Total production expenses were $3.54 billion in 1996, up 2 percent from the previous year.

The value added format is new this year. Data presented in Table 2-2. are preliminary and scheduled for publication by the Economic Research Service, USDA in October 1997.

Total farm assets, at $17.8 billion, as of December 31, 1995, were up 7 percent from the previous year. The increase in farm assets was led primarily by higher real estate values, which grew to over $12.6 billion, an increase of 10 percent from 1994. Total 1995 farm debt in Michigan was $2.7 billion, up 3 percent from 1994. The debt/asset ratio improved to 15.2 for 1995, down from 15.8 in 1994.

Government payments to farmers in Michigan dropped to $110 million in 1996, compared with $151 million the previous year, but up from $102 million in 1994. The decline is primarily due to the implementation of the Production Flexibility Program.
