The Christmas tree inventory is part of the Michigan Department of Agriculture's Rotational Survey Program. Information was collected from Michigan's Christmas tree growers. A commercial grower was defined as anyone growing at least 5 acres of Christmas trees.
There were 69,000 acres in commercial Christmas tree production on January 1, 1997. That was down from 75,000 acres on January 1, 1994. Several plantations with more than 500 acres in 1994 went out of business in the past three years; others reduced their acreages. The acreage on small and medium-sized tree farms increased. The top 5 counties, Wexford, Mis-saukee, Oceana, Kalkaska, and Mont-calm, accounted for more than 45 percent of the Christmas tree acreage in 1997.
