Cold Storage

The usable capacity of refrigerated warehouses in Michigan as of October 1, 1997, was 53.9 million cubic feet, virtually unchanged from 2 years ago. There were 9.2 million cubic feet of usable cooler space, down from 10.3 million cubic feet in October 1995. That figure excludes apple storage capacity. Usable freezer space increased to 44.7 million cubic feet from 43.2 million cubic feet. The number of general cold storage warehouses in Michigan fell, however, from 48 in 1995 to 42 in 1997.

Usable refrigerated storage capacity in the United States on October 1, 1997, was 2.2 billion cubic feet, up from 1.9 billion cubic feet 2 years earlier. Usable cooler space was 498 million cubic feet. Usable freezer space climbed from 1.5 billion to 1.6 billion cubic feet. The number of general refrigerated warehouses went up from 1,433 to 1,464.

The number of apple storage facilities in Michigan fell from 208 in October 1995, to 189 in October 1997. The usable capacity in October 1997 was 31.1 million cubic feet. Controlled atmosphere capacity in October 1997 was 7.9 million bushels. Michigan had more apple storage capacity than any state except Washington.
