Cash Receipts
Preliminary cash receipts from 1997 marketings of Michigan crops, livestock and livestock products totaled $3.59 billion. Total cash receipts were down less than one percent from the previous year, placing Michigan 22th nationally.

Crop cash receipts increased 4 percent from 1996, to $2.24 billion. Sales of crops were mixed with increases for cherries, soybeans, sugarbeets, wheat, and hay, while apples, corn, dry beans, and potatoes declined. Livestock cash receipts, at $1.35 billion, were down 7 percent from a year ago. Decreased sales of dairy products, cattle and calves, and eggs contributed to the decline.

Preliminary U.S. data shows that total cash receipts were up 5 percent to $208.7 billion for 1997. Crop cash receipts increased 5 percent to $112.1 billion. Livestock increased 4 percent to $96.6 billion.

Farm Income
Michigan's 1997 agricultural sector output totaled $4.15 billion, up 7 percent from 1996, and up 5 percent from 1995. Net farm income in 1997 increased 15 percent to $475 million. This increase in net farm income was primarily due to gains in the crop production, up 15 percent from 1996 to $2.38 billion. Livestock output at $1.34 billion, posted a decrease of 6 percent. Dairy products totaled $732.1 million, a 9 percent decrease. Total production expenses were $3.81 billion in 1997, up 8 percent from the previous year.

The value added format data presented in Table 2.2 are preliminary and scheduled for publication by the Economic Research Service, USDA in October 1997. Government payments to farmers in Michigan rose to $121 million in 1997, compared with $110 million the previous year, but down from $151 million in 1995.
