Floriculture
Michigan placed third nationally in value of wholesale sales of floriculture products in 1998. Only California and Florida reported larger sales than Michigan. The results in this report are based upon the decennial Census of Horticultural Specialties. Reports from Michigan's 862 commercial growers ($10,000 or more in gross sales) showed an estimated wholesale value of $235 million for all surveyed floriculture crops, up 11 percent from last year. This estimate includes summarized sales data as reported by growers with $100,000 or more in sales plus a calculated wholesale value of sales for operations with sales from $10,000 to $99,999. Crop category breakdowns for Michigan operations with more than $100,000 in sales and the percent change from 1997 were:

First, bedding/garden plants with $173 million in sales,     up 12 percent.
Second, flowering potted plants with $28.6 million in     sales, up 8 percent.
Third, cut flowers with $10.0 million in sales, down 13     percent.
Fourth, foliage for indoor or patio use with $3.1 million     in sales, down 8 percent.

Michigan leads the nation in value of sales for 10 floriculture crops:

Other notable Michigan crops that ranked second in value of sales nationally were:

Total greenhouse cover for all operations in the state rose 15 percent to 43.5 million square feet. This includes both rigid and film plastic greenhouses and glass greenhouses. Only California and Florida have more total greenhouse cover.
