nd-crops NEWS RELEASE Crop Production January 12, 2005 2004 Annual Crop Production Summary North Dakota Corn for Grain production in North Dakota for 2004 is estimated at 121 million bushels, down 27 percent from the November forecast and 8 percent below 2003's record high production, according to the North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. The significant drop since the November forecast was due in part to decreased yields. Yield averages 105 bushels per harvested acre, down from the previous year's 112 bushel yield and the lowest since the 1997 crop yield of 99 bushels. An estimated 1.15 million acres are harvested for grain, down from 1.50 million acres in the November forecast and 2 percent below 2003's record high harvested acres. Soybean production is estimated at 82.1 million bushels, down 11 percent from November's forecast and 7 percent below 2003's record high production. Yield is estimated at 23 bushels per harvested acre, down 2 bushels from the November forecast and 6 bushels below the previous year's final yield. Acres harvested are estimated at 3.57 million, down 3 percent from November but still a record high. Oil Sunflower production is estimated at 686 million pounds, down from 1.33 billion pounds in 2003 and 1.45 billion for 2002. Yield is estimated at 1,040 pounds per harvested acre, down from 1,300 pounds the previous year. Acres harvested are estimated at 660,000, down from 1.02 million acres for 2003. Non-Oil Sunflower production is estimated at 105 million pounds, down from 193 million pounds for 2003. Yield is estimated at 810 pounds compared to 1,330 pounds the previous year. An estimated 130,000 acres are harvested compared with 145,000 acres for 2003. Canola production for 2004 is estimated at 1.22 billion pounds, down 10 percent from 2003. The record high production was set in 2001 at 1.80 billion pounds. Yield for the 2004 crop is set at 1,630 pounds per acre, up from 1,410 pounds for 2003 and a record high since estimates were kept starting in 1991. Harvested acres total 750,000, down from the previous year's 960,000 acres. Flaxseed production is estimated at 9.94 million bushels, down from 9.99 million bushels in 2003. Yield per harvested acre is 20.5 bushels, up from 18.0 bushels the previous year. Acres harvested are estimated at 485,000. Dry Edible Pea production is set at a record high 6.93 million hundredweight (cwt), compared with 2.74 million cwt produced in 2003. Records for North Dakota dry edible pea production were first started in 1998. The yield per harvested acre is estimated at 2,340 pounds, also a record high. Acres harvested are estimated at 296,000, a record high. Lentil production is estimated at a record high 1.29 million cwt, compared to 632,000 cwt produced in 2003. Records for North Dakota lentil production were first started in 1998. Yield is estimated at 1,370 pounds, up from 1,170 pounds in 2003. Harvested acres totaled 94,000, a record high. Sugarbeet production for 2004 is estimated at 4.85 million tons, down from 5.20 million tons produced in 2003. The record high production was in 1998 at 5.39 million tons. Yield averages 19.7 tons per harvested acre, down from 20.4 tons the previous year. Acres harvested are set at 246,000, down from 255,000 for 2003. United States Corn for grain production is estimated at 11.8 billion bushels, up less than 1 percent from the November forecast and up 17 percent from the 10.1 billion bushels produced in 2003. The average U.S. grain yield is estimated at 160.4 bushels per acre, 0.2 bushels above the November forecast and up 18.2 bushels from 2003. Both production and yield estimates are the largest on record. Soybean production totaled 3.14 billion bushels, the largest U.S. soybean crop in history. This is down slightly from the November forecast but 28 percent above the 2003 level. The average yield per acre is estimated at a record high 42.5 bushels, 0.1 bushel below the November forecast, but 8.6 bushels above the 2003 final yield. Production of oil type sunflower, at 1.76 billion pounds, decreased 22 percent from 2003. Harvested acres are down 24 percent from the previous year but the yield increased by 31 pounds. Non-oil sunflower production, at 286 million pounds, decreased 29 percent from last year. Acreage harvested of non-oil varieties is down 11 percent from 2003 and the average yield declined 259 pounds from last year to 997 pounds per acre. Canola production is 1.34 billion pounds, down 11 percent from 2003. The canola yield, at 1,618 pounds per acre, is up 203 pounds from last year and is the highest yield on record, surpassing the previous record set in 1998 by 170 pounds.
