nd-crops NEWS RELEASE Small Grain Production July 12, 2005 Small Grain Production Forecast North Dakota Other Spring Wheat: Production is forecast at 271 million bushels, up from 244 million bushels in 2004 and the highest since 1996 when 314 million bushels were produced, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Acreage to be harvested for grain is expected to be 6.60 million acres, up from 5.95 million acres harvested last year. Average yield is forecast at 41.0 bushels per harvested acre, the same as last year, which was the highest since 1992. Durum Wheat: Production is forecast at 57.8 million bushels, up 9 percent from last year but down 1 percent from 2003. Acreage for grain harvest is expected at 1.70 million acres, up from 1.60 million acres last year. Average yield is forecast at 34.0 bushels per harvested acre, up 1 bushel from last year and the highest since 1992. Barley: Production is forecast at 72.5 million bushels, down 21 percent from 2004. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 1.15 million acres, down from 1.48 million acres last year and lowest since 1936 when 476,000 acres were harvested. Expected yield is 63.0 bushels per acre, up from 62.0 bushels last year. Oats: Production is forecast at 16.1 million bushels, an increase of 14 percent from last year. Acreage to be harvested for grain is expected to be 240,000 acres, up from 220,000 acres last year. The forecasted yield is 67.0 bushels per acre, up from 64.0 bushels in 2004. The crop production forecasts in this report are based on yield projections and acreage reports collected from a cross-section of North Dakota producers around July 1. This report is based on conditions around July 1 and assumes no extreme conditions the remainder of the crop season. United States Other Spring Wheat: Production is forecast at 589 million bushels, up 3 percent from 2004. The yield is forecast at 43.2 bushels per acre, unchanged from last year's record high. Of the total production, 552 million bushels are Hard Red Spring wheat, up 5 percent from last season. Durum Wheat: Production is forecast at 94.1 million bushels, up 5 percent from 2004. The yield is forecast at 38.4 bushels per acre, 0.4 bushel more than last year. Barley: Production for 2005 is forecast at 243 million bushels, 13 percent below 2004. The average yield is forecast at 70.0 bushels per acre, up 0.6 bushel from last year. If realized, this would be the highest yield on record. Area for harvest, at 3.47 million acres, is down 14 percent from 2004 and the lowest since 1890. Oats: Production is forecast at 131 million bushels, 13 percent above last year's 116 million bushels. The forecasted yield is 66.5 bushels per acre, up 1.8 bushels from 2004. If realized, this would be a record high yield. Growers expect to harvest 1.98 million acres for grain, up 10 percent from last year.
