nd-crops NEWS RELEASE June Acreage June 30, 2005 JUNE ACREAGE ESTIMATES North Dakota Acreage planted to other spring wheat in North Dakota for 2005 is estimated at 6.80 million acres, a 10 percent increase from last year's 6.20 million acres and the end of a three year decline that started after 2001 when 7.10 million acres were planted. This is based on a survey of North Dakota farmers and ranchers conducted by the North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service during the first two weeks of June. The data collected reflects actual plantings and producer intentions at that time. Other spring wheat acres to be harvested for grain is estimated at 6.60 million acres, up from last year's 5.95 million acres. Durum wheat planted acreage is estimated at 1.80 million acres, up from 1.75 million acres last year which was the lowest since 1963 when 1.69 million acres were planted. Harvested area is expected to total 1.70 million acres, up from 1.60 million acres last year which was the lowest since 1961 when 1.34 million were harvested. Soybean planted acres, at 3.25 million, are down 13 percent from 2004's record high 3.75 million acres, but are still the second largest area planted. Producers expect to harvest 3.20 million acres. Of the acres planted, 89 percent were planted with genetically modified, herbicide resistant seed. Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 1.50 million acres, down from the record high 1.80 million acres last year. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated to be a record high 1.20 million acres, above last year's 1.15 million acres harvested. The previous record high corn for grain harvested acreage was in 2003, with 1.17 million acres. Barley acreage is down 22 percent from last year to 1.25 million acres planted, the lowest since records began in 1926. Acres to be harvest for grain are estimated at 1.15 million, down from 1.48 million last year and lowest since 1936 when 476,000 acres were harvested. Oat planted acres increased to 500,000, up from 490,000 last year. Acres to be harvested for grain are estimated at 240,000, up from 220,000 last year. Canola planted acres are estimated at 1.00 million acres, up from last year's 780,000 acres. The record high acreage of 1.30 million was set in 2001 and 2002. It is estimated that 980,000 acres will be harvested. Acres planted to oil sunflower rose to 1.00 million, up 39 percent from 2004. An estimated 960,000 acres is expected to be harvested. Non-oil sunflower acreage is estimated at 230,000, up from last year's 160,000 acres. Harvested area is forecast at 220,000 acres. Flaxseed acres increased 73 percent from last year to 850,000. This is the highest acreage since 1974 when 886,000 acres were planted. It is estimated that 840,000 acres are to be harvested. Dry edible bean acreage is up 20 percent from last year to 670,000 acres, but is still below the record high 790,000 acres set in 2002. Acres to be harvested are estimated at 620,000. Sugarbeet planted acres, at 253,000, are down from 256,000 last year. The record high planted acreage was set in 2002 at 265,000 acres. Harvested area is forecast at 245,000 acres. Alfalfa hay acreage that will be cut is estimated at 1.45 million acres, up from 1.30 million acres in 2004 but down from 1.60 million acres two years ago. Other hay acreage that will be cut is forecast at 1.30 million acres, down from 1.43 million in 2004. United States Acreage planted to other spring wheat for 2005 is estimated at 14.1 million, up 2 percent from 2004. Grain area is expected to total 13.6 million acres, up 4 percent from last year. The durum planted area for 2005 is estimated at 2.57 million acres, up fractionally from last year. Area to be harvested for grain is expected to total 2.45 million acres, 4 percent above last year's level. Soybean planted area is estimated at 73.3 million acres, down 3 percent from last year. Area for harvest is forecast at 72.4 million acres, down 2 percent from 2004. Corn planted area for all purposes is estimated at 81.6 million acres, up 1 percent from 2004 and 4 percent above 2003. Growers expect to harvest 74.4 million acres for grain, up 1 percent from 2004. Growers seeded 3.97 million acres of barley for 2005, down 12 percent from the 4.53 million acres seeded a year ago, and the lowest since barley planted acreage estimates began in 1926. Acres for harvest, at 3.47 million, are down 14 percent from the 2004 level, and the lowest since 1890. Producers planted 1.09 million acres of canola in 2005, up 26 percent from 2004, and the first increase in U.S. acreage since 2000. Area planted to sunflower totaled 2.71 million acres in 2005, up 45 percent from last year and the first acreage increase since 1998. Planted area of oil type varieties, at 2.18 million acres, is up 42 percent from 2004 and the non-oil varieties, estimated at 538,000 acres, are up 58 percent from last year. Dry bean growers planted 1.67 million acres for 2005, up 24 percent from last year and 19 percent above two years ago. Acres to be harvested are forecast at 1.57 million, up 29 percent from last year and 16 percent above 2003.
