nd-crops NEWS RELEASE Grain Stocks March 31, 2005 March 1, 2005 Grain Stocks Report North Dakota All Wheat stored in all positions in North Dakota on March 1, 2005 totaled 163 million bushels, according to the North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. This is an 8 percent increase from a year ago. All wheat stocks include durum, other spring and winter wheat. On-farm stocks are estimated at 102 million bushels, up 13 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 61.0 million bushels, are down 1 percent from a year ago. The indicated December 2004-February 2005 total disappearance is 71.0 million bushels, down 10 percent from the same period in 2004. Durum wheat stocks in all positions totaled 34.5 million bushels. This is up 35 percent from a year ago, but equal to two years ago. On-farm stocks, at 25.0 million bushels, are up 32 percent from March 1, 2004, but equal to two years ago. Off-farm stocks totaled 9.50 million bushels, up 44 percent from a year ago. The December-February disappearance is 12.8 million bushels, down 6 percent from the same period a year earlier. Barley stocks in all positions totaled 60.0 million bushels, up 26 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are 34.0 million bushels, up 36 percent from March 1, 2004. The record low March 1 on-farm stocks were 10.0 million bushels in 2003. Off-farm stocks totaled 26.0 million bushels, up 14 percent from March 1, 2004. Disappearance during the quarter totaled 23.4 million bushels, up 8 percent from the same period a year earlier. Corn stocks in all positions totaled 69.5 million bushels, compared to 56.5 million bushels on March 1, 2004. Of the total stocks, 48.0 million bushels are stored on farms, up from 35.0 million bushels last year. Off-farm stocks, at 21.5 million bushels, are equal to last year's record high. Disappearance during the quarter totaled 36.0 million bushels, 27 percent below last year's record high disappearance. Soybean stocks in all positions totaled 30.0 million bushels, up from 14.9 million bushels a year ago and 24.8 million bushels on March 1, 2003. On-farm stocks totaled 19.0 million bushels, up from 5.20 million bushels on March 1, 2004. Off-farm stocks, at 11.0 million bushels, are up from last year's 9.70 million bushels on March 1. All sunflower stocks in all positions totaled 405 million pounds, compared to the September 1, 2004 stocks of 260 million pounds. This is the first March 1 stocks estimate made. Previously, sunflower stocks were estimated only on September 1. Oil sunflower stocks in all positions totaled 345 million pounds on March 1, compared to September 1, 2004 stocks of 213 million pounds. Oil sunflower on-farm stocks totaled 76.0 million pounds, compared to 8.50 million pounds on September 1. Non-oil sunflower stocks in all positions totaled 60.0 million pounds, compared to 47.7 million pounds on September 1. Non-oil on-farm stocks totaled 12.0 million pounds, compared to 2.70 million pounds. United States All wheat stored in all positions on March 1, 2005 totaled 981 million bushels, down 4 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at 305 million bushels, up 18 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 676 million bushels, are down 11 percent from a year ago. The December 2004 - February 2005 indicated disappearance is 449 million bushels, down 10 percent from the same period a year earlier. Durum wheat stocks in all positions on March 1 totaled 55.3 million bushels, up 25 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 35.2 million bushels, are up 42 percent from March 1, 2004. Off-farm stocks totaled 20.1 million bushels, up 3 percent from a year ago. The December 2004 - February 2005 indicated disappearance of 23.3 million bushels is up 3 percent from the same period a year earlier. Barley stocks in all positions totaled 191 million bushels, up 25 percent from March 1, 2004. On-farm stocks are estimated at 79.7 million bushels, 54 percent above a year ago. Disappearance during the quarter totaled 55.3 million bushels, up 23 percent from the same period a year earlier. Corn stocks in all positions totaled 6.75 billion bushels, up 28 percent from March 1, 2004. This is the highest March 1 stocks level since 1988. Of the total stocks, 4.14 billion bushels are stored on farms, up 37 percent from a year earlier. Disappearance is 2.70 billion bushels, compared with 2.68 billion bushels during the same period last year. Soybeans stored in all positions on March 1 totaled 1.38 billion bushels, up 52 percent from March 1, 2004. Soybean stocks stored on farms are estimated at 795 million bushels, up 123 percent from a year ago. Disappearance for the quarter totaled 924 million bushels, up 18 percent from the same period a year earlier. Sunflower stocks in all positions on March 1 totaled 861 million pounds. All stocks stored on farms totaled 166 million pounds and off-farm stocks totaled 695 million pounds. This is the first time estimates have been provided for March 1 sunflower stocks and were initiated by a request from the sunflower industry. Stocks of oil type sunflower seed were 616 million pounds, 139 million pounds on-farm and 477 million pounds off-farm. Non-oil sunflower stocks totaled 247 million pounds, with 27.7 million pounds being stored on the farm and 219 million pounds off the farm.
