nd-crops NEWS RELEASE November Crop Production November 10, 2005 November Crop Production Report North Dakota Soybean production in North Dakota is forecast at a record high 109 million bushels, up 3 percent from the October forecast and 33 percent from last year, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. As of November 1, the state yield is expected to average a record high 37 bushels per harvested acre, up 1 bushel from the October forecast and 14 bushels from last year. The previous record high yield was set in 1999 at 35 bushels per harvested acre. Area harvested is estimated at 2.95 million acres, down 17 percent from 2004's record high. Corn production is forecast at a record high 141 million bushels, up 4 percent from the October forecast and 17 percent from last year. The previous record high production was set in 2003 at 131 million bushels. The corn for grain yield is expected to average a record high 125 bushels per acre, up 5 bushels from the October forecast and 20 bushels from last year. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 1.13 million, 2 percent below 2004. Dry edible pea production for the season is estimated at 9.79 million hundredweight (cwt), up from 6.93 million cwt last year and a record high since estimates began in 1998. Average yield is estimated at 1,900 pounds per harvested acre, down from last year's record high 2,340 pounds. Acres for harvest are estimated at a record high 515,000, up from 296,000 acres last year. Lentil production is estimated at 1.97 million hundredweight (cwt), up from 1.29 million cwt last year and a record high since estimates began in 1998. Average yield is estimated at 1,350 pounds per harvested acre, down from last year's yield of 1,370 pounds. Acres for harvest are estimated at a record high 146,000, up from 94,000 acres last year. Fall potato production is expected to be 20.5 million cwt, down 23 percent from last year's production of 26.8 million cwt and the lowest since 1990 when 16.7 million cwt was produced. The average yield is expected to be 250 cwt per harvested acre, down from last year's record high 265 cwt. Planted acres, at 92,000, are down 13,000 from last year and the lowest since 1955 when 92,000 acres were also planted. Acres harvested are estimated at 82,000, down 19,000 acres from last year and the lowest since 1952 when 80,000 acres were harvested. Producers expect to sell 86.0 percent of the total production compared to 88.5 percent actually marketed last year and the 2000-2004 average of 86.2 percent. United States Soybean production is forecast at 3.04 billion bushels, up 3 percent from October but 3 percent below 2004. If realized, this would be the second largest U.S. soybean crop on record, only behind last year's crop. Based on November 1 conditions, yields are expected to average a record high 42.7 bushels per acre, up 1.1 bushels from October and 0.5 bushel above last year. Corn production is forecast at 11.0 billion bushels, up 2 percent from last month but 7 percent below 2004. Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 148.4 bushels per acre, up 2.3 bushels from October but 12.0 bushels below last year. If realized, both production and yield would be the second largest on record, behind last year. Dry edible pea production is estimated at 13.8 million cwt, up 21 percent from the 2004 estimate. Area for harvest, at 761,900 acres, is 50 percent above a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 1,813 pounds per acre, down 436 pounds from last season. Lentil production is estimated at 5.10 million cwt, up 22 percent from last year. Area for harvest is forecast at 432,000 acres, up 31 percent from the previous year. Average yield is expected to be 1,181 pounds per acre, down 90 pounds per acre from 2004. Fall potato production for 2005 is forecast at 382 million cwt, down 7 percent from last year. Area harvested, at 951,800 acres, is virtually unchanged from the July forecast but 7 percent below last year. The average yield is forecast at a record high 402 cwt per acre, 1 cwt above the previous high set last year.
