nd-crops NEWS RELEASE Small Grain Estimates Updated November 12, 2004 Small Grain Estimates Updated North Dakota Survey respondents who reported wheat, barley or oat acreage not yet harvested in North Dakota, Montana, Minnesota and Wyoming during the annual September survey were re-contacted to determine final acreage and production. Based on this updated information, the North Dakota Agriculture Statistics Service made the following changes to the Annual Small Grains 2004 Summary for North Dakota, published September 30. Durum wheat harvested acreage for North Dakota declined 80,000 acres to 1.60 million acres. Average yield for durum increased one bushel to 33 bushels per harvested acre. Total durum production fell 960,000 bushels to 52.8 million total bushels. Because unharvested production is a component of on-farm stocks, durum stocks as of September 1, dropped 1.00 million bushels to 46.0 million bushels. Spring wheat harvested acreage declined 50,000 acres to 5.95 million acres with production falling 2.05 million bushels to 244 million total bushels. The average yield of 41 bushels was not changed. All wheat harvested acres followed the durum and spring wheat acreage declines to 7.78 million acres. Average yield increased 0.2 bushels to 39.4 bushels per harvested acre with production falling 3.01 million bushels to 306.7 million total bushels. The all wheat on-farm stocks as of September 1 dropped 3.00 million bushels to 247 million bushels. Barley harvested acres dropped 10,000 acres to 1.48 million acres with production decreasing 620,000 bushels to 91.8 million total bushels. The average yield of 62 bushels was not changed. The barley on-farm stocks dropped 1.00 million bushels to 72.0 million bushels. Oat harvested acreage, at 220,000 acres, decreased 5,000 acres. However, the average yield increased 2 bushels to 64 bushels per harvested acre. Total production increased 130,000 bushels to 14.1 million total bushels. The on-farm stocks of 14.5 million bushels did not change. United States Durum harvested area was reduced 5,000 acres in Montana while yield per acre was increased 1.0 bushel. No changes were made in Minnesota. Total U.S. durum production is estimated at 89.9 million bushels, 1 percent below the previous estimate and 7 percent under last year. Other spring wheat harvested area declined 20,000 acres in Minnesota and 50,000 acres in Montana. Acreage was unchanged in Wyoming, and no changes were made to yield in any of the states. Total U.S. other spring wheat production is estimated at 569 million bushels, 1 percent below the previous estimate but 7 percent above last year. All wheat production in the United States is 2.16 billion bushels, only fractionally below the previous estimate and 8 percent below last year. Barley yield is estimated at 68.0 bushels per acre in Minnesota, a decrease of 2.0 bushels. As a result of this change, production is down 230,000 bushels in Minnesota. Acreage, yield, and production are unchanged in Montana and Wyoming. Total U.S. production is estimated at 279 million bushels, slightly below the previous estimate but slightly higher than last year's production. Oat harvested area was reduced 10,000 acres in Minnesota, while yield per acre remained unchanged. Acreage and yield estimates were unchanged in Montana and Wyoming. As a result of the changes in Minnesota and North Dakota, oat production in the United States is 116 million bushels, down fractionally from the previous estimate and 20 percent from last year.
