nd-crops NEWS RELEASE October Crop Production October 12, 2005 October Crop Production North Dakota Soybean production is forecast at a record high 106 million bushels, up 29 percent from last year according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 36 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from the September forecast and 13 bushels from last year. Area to be harvested is estimated at 2.95 million acres, down 17 percent from 2004. Corn production is forecast at a record high 136 million bushels, down 6 percent from the September forecast, but 12 percent above last year. Corn for grain yields are expected to average 120 bushels per harvested acre, unchanged from the September forecast but 15 bushels better than last year. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 1.13 million, 2 percent below 2004. Dry edible bean production is forecast at 8.10 million hundredweight (cwt), 71 percent above last year. Yield is forecast at 1,500 pounds per acre, up 100 pounds from August and 500 pounds from last year. Area for harvest is expected to be 540,000 acres, 14 percent above last year. All sunflower (oil and non-oil) production for 2005 is forecast at 1.73 billion pounds, up 119 percent from last year. The average yield for all sunflower is forecast at 1,560 pounds per harvested acre, down from 1,002 pounds last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.10 million, up 41 percent from last year. Canola production is forecast at 1.38 billion pounds, up 13 percent from 2004. The yield forecast, at 1,350 pounds per acre, is down 280 pounds from last year. Acres for harvest, at 1.02 million, are up 36 percent from last year. Planted acres for selected crops were updated based on the review of administrative data. Soybean planted acreage was revised down to 3.00 million, from 3.05 million in August. Corn planted acres were revised down to 1.41 million acres from 1.50 million in June. All dry edible bean planted acres were revised down 10,000 acres from August to 620,000. All sunflower planted acres were revised down to 1.15 million acres from 1.23 million in June, while canola planted acres were revised up 40,000 acres from June to 1.04 million. Harvested acreages were also updated to reflect the adjustments made to the planted acres. The crop production forecasts in this report are based on yield projections and acreage reports collected from a cross-section of North Dakota producers on or around October 1. This report is based on conditions at that time and assumes no extreme conditions during the remainder of the crop season. United States Soybean production is forecast at 2.97 billion bushels, up 4 percent from the September forecast but 5 percent below 2004. Yield is expected to average 41.6 bushels per acre, up 2.0 bushels from September but 0.6 bushel below last year's record high yield. Area for harvest is forecast at 71.3 million acres, down 4 percent from last year. Corn production is forecast at 10.9 billion bushels, up 2 percent from last month but 8 percent below 2004. Yields are expected to average 146.1 bushels per acre, up 2.9 bushels from September but 14.3 bushels below last year. Farmers now expect to harvest 74.3 million acres of corn for grain, up 1 percent from 2004. Dry edible bean production is forecast at 26.1 million cwt for 2005, up 1 percent from the August forecast and 47 percent above last year. The average yield is forecast at 1,715 pounds per acre, an increase of 28 pounds from the August forecast and 255 pounds above last year. Harvested acreage is forecast at 1.52 million acres, up 25 percent from last year. Sunflower production is forecast at 3.87 billion pounds, up 89 percent from 2004. The yield forecast, at 1,500 pounds, is 302 pounds more than the 2004 yield. Farmers expect to harvest 2.58 million acres, up 51 percent from the 2004 acreage. Canola production is forecast at 1.50 billion pounds, up 12 percent from 2004. The yield forecast, at 1,333 pounds per acre, is 285 pounds below last year's record high yield. Farmers expect to harvest 1.13 million acres, up 36 percent from 2004.
