nd-crops NEWS RELEASE Crop Production September 12, 2005 September Crop Production Forecast North Dakota Soybean production is forecast at a record high 105 million bushels, up 9 percent from the August forecast and 28 percent above 2004, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Based on conditions as of September 1, yields are expected to average a record 35 bushels per harvested acre, up 3 bushels from the August forecast and 12 bushels above last year. Area to be harvested is estimated at 3.00 million acres, down 16 percent from 2004. Corn production is forecast at 144 million bushels, up 4 percent from the August forecast and 19 percent above 2004. Corn for grain yields are expected to average 120 bushels per harvested acre, up 5 bushels from the August forecast and 15 bushels better than 2004. If realized, both production and yield would be the largest on record. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at a record high 1.20 million, up 4 percent from 2004. Sugarbeet production is forecast at 4.56 million tons, unchanged from the August forecast, but down 6 percent from last year. The average yield per harvested acre is expected to be 19.0 tons, 0.7 tons lower than 2004. Area to be harvested is estimated at 240,000 acres, down 6,000 acres from last year. The crop production forecasts in this report are based on yield projections and acreage reports collected from a cross-section of North Dakota producers on or around September 1. This report is based on conditions at that time and assumes no extreme conditions during the remainder of the crop season. United States Soybean production is forecast at 2.86 billion bushels, up 2 percent from the August forecast but down 9 percent from the record crop of 2004. Yields are expected to average 39.6 bushels per acre, up 0.9 bushel from August. Area for harvest is forecast at 72.2 million acres, unchanged from August but down 2 percent from last year's record high acreage. Corn production is forecast at 10.6 billion bushels, up 3 percent from last month but 10 percent below 2004. If realized, this would be the second largest crop on record. Yields are expected to average 143.2 bushels per acre, up 4.0 bushels from August but 17.2 bushels below the record high last year. Acreage harvested and to be harvested for grain is forecast at 74.3 million, down fractionally from August but up 1 percent from 2004. Sugarbeet production for 2005 is forecast at 26.3 million tons, 1 percent below the August forecast and 12 percent below last year's production. The yield is forecast at 21.2 tons per acre, down 0.1 ton from August and 1.7 tons below 2004. Growers in the 12 sugarbeet-producing states expect to harvest 1.24 million acres, down 5,000 acres from last month and 5 percent below last year.
