nd-crops NEWS RELEASE Small Grain Summary September 30, 2005 2005 Small Grain Production Estimates North Dakota Other spring wheat production for 2005 is estimated at 224 million bushels, down 11 percent from the August 1 forecast and down 8 percent from last year, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. The area harvested for grain, at 6.6 million acres, is up 11 percent from 2004. The yield is 34.0 bushels per acre, down 4.0 bushels from August and 7.0 bushels from last year. Durum wheat production is estimated at 68.3 million bushels, up 18 percent from August and up 29 percent from 2004. Harvested acres at 1.95 million are up 22 percent from last year. The yield is 35.0 bushels per acre, up 1.0 bushel from August and 2.0 bushels from last year. This is the highest average yield since 1992's record high of 38.0 bushels per acre. Winter wheat production is estimated at 11.1 million bushels, up 12 percent from 2004. The area harvested for grain totaled 285,000 acres, up 27 percent from a year ago. This is the highest level since 1986 when the area harvested for grain was 480,000 acres. The yield is 39.0 bushels per acre, down 5.0 bushels from last year. All wheat production is estimated at 304 million bushels, down 1 percent from 2004. The area harvested for grain totals 8.84 million acres, up 14 percent from last year. Average yield is 34.4 bushels per acre, down 5 bushels from last year. Barley production is estimated at 57.2 million bushels, down 14 percent from August and down 38 percent from 2004. This is the lowest production since 1988 when 45,150 bushels were produced. Area harvested for grain, at 1.06 million acres, is 28 percent lower than last year. The yield averages 54.0 bushels per acre, down 4.0 bushels from August and 8.0 bushels below 2004. Oat production is estimated at 14.2 million bushels, down 12 percent from August, but up 1 percent from 2004. Area harvested for grain, at 240,000 acres, is up 9 percent from last year. Estimated yield is 59.0 bushels per acre, down 5.0 bushels from the previous year. United States Other spring wheat production for 2005 is estimated at 504 million bushels, up 9 percent from the last forecast but down 11 percent from last year. Harvested area is 13.6 million acres, up 28,000 acres from August and up 3 percent from 2004. The U.S. yield is 37.1 bushels per acre, 3.5 bushels below the August forecast and down 6.1 bushels from the record high yield in 2004. Durum wheat production for 2005 totaled 100 million bushels, up 8 percent from August 1 and 11 percent above last year. Grain area harvested totaled 2.70 million acres, up 10 percent from August and up 14 percent from 2004. The U.S. yield is estimated at 37.2 bushels per acre, down 0.7 bushel from the last forecast and 0.8 bushel below 2004. Winter wheat production is estimated at 1.49 billion bushels, down 2 percent from the August forecast and down slightly from last year. The U.S. yield is 44.4 bushels per acre, unchanged from August but 0.9 bushel above last year's final yield. Acreage for grain is estimated at 33.7 million acres, 2 percent below the last forecast and down 3 percent from the previous year. All wheat production totaled 2.10 billion bushels in 2005, down 3 percent from the last forecast and 3 percent below 2004. The U.S. yield is 42.0 bushels per acre, 1.0 bushel below the August forecast and down 1.2 bushels from a year ago. Barley production is estimated at 212 million bushels, down 10 percent from the August 1 forecast and down 24 percent from last year's estimate. Average yield per acre, at 64.8 bushels, is 3.4 bushels below August and 4.8 bushels below 2004. The area harvested for grain is estimated at 3.28 million acres, 19 percent below a year ago. Nationally, harvested area is the smallest since 1890 and production is the lowest since 1936, but the average yield is the second highest on record. Oat production is estimated at 115 million bushels, down 10 percent from the August forecast and down 1 percent from last year. The estimated yield is 63.1 bushels per acre, down 1.6 bushels from both the previous forecast and previous year. Harvested area is 1.82 million acres, 2 percent above last year.
