1997 BLUEBERRY STATISTICS

Total value of the 1997 blueberry crop was $31.9 million, a 3% decrease from the record high of $33.0 million reached in 1996. Utilized production, at 32.0 million pounds, decreased 6 percent from last year. The overall season average price was 99.8 cents per pound; the average fresh market price was 102.0 cents per pound, while a record high processing price was 95.0 cents per pound.

The area harvested, at 7,800 acres, was up 100 acres from 1996. Average yield was 4,100 pounds per acre, compared with 4,420 pounds per acre a year earlier.

Atlantic and Burlington Counties accounted for 90% of area harvested and 96% of the State's utilized production. The top blueberry producing county in New Jersey was Atlantic County with 4,300 acres harvested and an average yield of 4,510 pounds per acre. Total production for Atlantic was 19.4 million pounds. Burlington County producers harvested 2,700 acres with an average yield of 4,150 pounds per acre and total production of 11.2 million pounds.
