CROP SUMMARY FOR THE WEEK ENDING APRIL 17, 2005


NEW MEXICO: There were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture was 2% very short,30% short, 65% adequate, and 3% surplus. Wind damage was 14% light, 15% moderate, and 2% severe. Freeze damage was 3% light and 9% moderate and 1% severe. Farmers were busy with land preparation, planting chile and corn, and irrigating. Alfalfa conditions were reported as 1% poor, 35% fair, 43% good and 21% excellent with the first cutting at 51%. Cotton progress was 28% planted and corn was 12% planted. Total wheat condition was reported as 22% fair, 77% good, and 1% excellent with 13% being grazed. Lettuce condition was 5% fair, 43% good and 52% excellent. Chile condition was 51% fair and 41% good and 8% excellent with 77% planted. Onion condition was in 13% fair, 62% good and 25% excellent. Cattle conditions were 1% very poor, 2% poor, 29% fair, 52% good, and 16% excellent. Sheep were reported as 3% very poor, 4% poor, 44% fair, 40% good, and 9% excellent. Range and pasture conditions were 2% very poor, 14% poor, 45% fair, 38% good and 1% excellent. Ranchers were busy maintaining herds and water.

WEATHER SUMMARY

Hit and miss showers and thunderstorms developed over New Mexico, mainly toward the end of the week. Some of the storm produced weak tornados, damaging winds and hail, especially Saturday and Sunday. Greatest precipitation amounts included .81 inches at Carrizozo and .76 inches at Roy and Las Vegas. Temperatures for the week were generally normal to slightly below normal in the east, and a little above normal in the west.

MILK PRODUCTION


NEW MEXICO: Milk production in the state during March totaled 576 million pounds. Production per cow totaled 1,790 pounds and the number of milk cows on farms was 322,000 head.

UNITED STATES: Milk production in the 23 major States during March totaled 13.8 billion pounds, up 3.1 percent from March 2004. February revised production, at 12.3 billion pounds, was down 0.5 percent from February 2004. However, production was up 3.1 percent on a per day basis after adjusting for the leap year. The February revision represented an increase of 30 million pounds or 0.2 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,704 pounds for March, 43 pounds above March 2004. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.10 million head, 38,000 head more than March 2004, and 21,000 head more than February 2005.
